Think the AA is just about roadside assistance? Think again.
For over a century, we've been evolving and adapting. Today, as the nation's leading motoring organisation, we offer a wide range of products and services to millions of customers. From roadside assistance to home and motor insurance, and the latest driving technologies, we have it all. As we continue to expand, diversify, and modernise, joining us as an AI Engineer means you'll play a crucial role in our success and be part of this exciting motoring journey.
Our Chief Operating Office (COO) are the backbone of The AA, providing both stability and structure to support growth and innovation. We are the drivers of change.
This is the job
At The AA, we are building a newly established AI function with the ambition to create intelligent products and services that make a meaningful difference for our members, customers and frontline teams. We are now looking for an AI Engineer to design, build and operate production ready AI solutions using world class datasets and modern engineering practices.
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who is as comfortable writing and debugging Python as they are making technical decisions. You will spend most of your time designing, writing, testing and improving AI and Machine Learning systems, taking solutions beyond experimentation and into reliable production use.
You will combine hands on delivery with technical ownership, working through ambiguity, making pragmatic engineering decisions and helping others deliver effectively. Depending on the initiative, you may own an outcome end to end or take responsibility for a defined technical area within a broader programme, working closely with product managers, data scientists, engineers and business stakeholders.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

- Write clean, maintainable and well tested Python, developing reliable backend services, APIs and cloud native AI applications.
- Take technical ownership of AI solutions or defined areas of larger initiatives, making engineering decisions and taking solutions from discovery through to production.
- Turn complex and sometimes ambiguous business problems into practical technical solutions, evaluating different approaches and making informed decisions based on evidence and engineering trade-offs.
- Apply strong engineering practices across testing, CI/CD, containerisation, deployment, monitoring, observability, MLOps and LLMOps, ensuring solutions remain reliable and effective in production.
- Work collaboratively across product, data, engineering and the wider business, providing technical guidance and supporting responsible AI delivery through security, governance, evaluation and performance monitoring.
What do I need?

- Strong software and backend engineering fundamentals, with experience building reliable APIs, services or cloud native applications using modern engineering practices.
- The ability to work independently through technical ambiguity, breaking down problems, identifying constraints, evaluating approaches and making sound technical decisions without relying on others to frame the solution.
- Practical experience with modern AI application patterns such as Generative AI, LLMs, RAG, agentic systems or Machine Learning, alongside the communication skills to explain technical decisions and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences.
