About The Role
The Principal Applied AI Engineer at i.AI is a strategic leadership position responsible for defining and executing the technical vision for applied AI initiatives across the organization. This role involves setting the overarching strategy for AI delivery, managing a diverse portfolio of innovative products, and ensuring their successful deployment at a national scale. The successful candidate will lead complex projects, navigate ambiguity, and deliver pioneering AI solutions that transform government departments, sectors, or policy areas. Additionally, this role requires mentoring upcoming AI engineering leaders, identifying talent gaps, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to maintain cutting-edge technological standards. The Principal Applied AI Engineer will also advise on long-term technical strategies, own key platforms, and contribute to shaping the future of AI within the public sector.

Qualifications
- Extensive experience leading the technical direction of large-scale AI products or solutions, ideally within frontier AI environments
- Proven track record of shipping impactful AI products that drive sector or policy transformation
- Recognition as an AI leader with a strong professional network, potentially with international standing
- Deep expertise in at least one of the core disciplines: Entrepreneurship, Machine Learning/Deep Learning, or Full Stack Engineering
- Strong working capability across the remaining two disciplines
- Experience in navigating ambiguity and delivering innovative solutions in complex environments
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to attract and inspire top-tier talent
- Knowledge of public sector domains such as health, education, or planning is preferred
- Technical proficiency with tools and technologies such as Python, TypeScript, AWS, Azure, GCP, PyTorch, LangGraph, LangChain, DSPy, Langfuse, Inspect, and familiarity with frontier models
Responsibilities
- Define and implement the strategic vision for applied AI initiatives across the organization
- Lead the execution of a portfolio of AI products, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with organizational goals
- Navigate complex challenges and ambiguity to develop innovative AI solutions that have a transformative impact
- Identify key talent gaps within the team and actively participate in recruiting and talent development efforts
- Mentor and coach emerging AI engineering leaders to foster a high-performance team culture
- Own and maintain major AI platforms or tools, providing guidance on technical strategy and best practices
- Collaborate with government stakeholders and external partners to ensure AI solutions meet policy, ethical, and operational standards
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in AI and frontier models, integrating new technologies into ongoing projects
- Advise on long-term technical strategy and contribute to shaping the future of AI within the public sector

- Competitive salary of up to £145,000, including a base salary of £71,525 plus a technical allowance of £73,475
- Employer pension contribution of 28.97%
