About The Role
The Artificial Intelligence Collaboration Centre (AICC) at Queen's University Belfast is seeking a highly skilled and motivated AI Research and Development Specialist. The successful candidate will be based at Queen's University Belfast and will play a crucial role in supporting applied AI projects developed in partnership with local and regional businesses. The primary focus will be on developing rapid proof-of-concept solutions that address real-world business challenges through innovative AI applications. The role involves close collaboration with academic researchers, industry partners, and internal teams to translate cutting-edge research into practical, scalable solutions. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to the design and delivery of AI skills programs aimed at upskilling the local workforce and fostering a culture of innovation within the region.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should possess a strong academic background complemented by practical experience in AI and software development. Essential qualifications include a 2:1 Honours Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline. Alternatively, extensive industry experience in a relevant field will also be considered. Candidates must demonstrate hands-on experience in software design and development within a commercial R&D environment, with a proven track record of producing high-quality outputs such as prototypes, technical reports, and project deliverables that meet formal quality standards. Familiarity with current AI and Machine Learning methodologies and tools, including agentic patterns, large language model orchestration, and vision models, is essential. Desirable qualifications include a postgraduate degree (MEng, MSc, or Ph.D.) in a relevant area, cloud computing expertise (AWS, Azure), and experience working with AI tools outside the frontier model space, such as open-weight models, fine-tuning, and edge models. Experience in high-technology startups will be considered an advantage.

Responsibilities
- Lead the development of applied AI solutions in collaboration with industry partners, ensuring rapid prototyping and proof-of-concept delivery.
- Design, implement, and evaluate AI and machine learning models tailored to real-world business problems.
- Collaborate closely with academic researchers to translate cutting-edge research into practical applications.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of AI skills training programs to enhance regional expertise and workforce capabilities.
- Document technical specifications, project reports, and demonstrators, ensuring compliance with quality assurance procedures.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in AI and related technologies, integrating innovative approaches into projects.
- Support the dissemination of project results through presentations, publications, and industry engagement activities.
