AI Engineering Tech Lead - Energy Trading & Shipping

Location: Canary Wharf, London - 3 days on-site
Rate: £550 per day
Duration: 6 months

IDPP Consulting are recruiting for an AI Engineering Tech Lead to join the Innovation team within the Trading & Shipping business of a global energy company.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on taking AI proofs of concept from initial idea through to production. You will work closely with traders, analysts and operations teams to identify opportunities where AI can deliver measurable commercial value.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a portfolio of AI proofs of concept from scoping through to scale or stop decisions.
  • Build and deliver AI solutions using LLMs, RAG, agentic workflows and AI integrations.
  • Work directly with trading and commercial teams to translate business problems into technical solutions.
  • Establish engineering standards around testing, evaluation, monitoring and production readiness.
  • Take successful prototypes into live production environments.
  • Lead a small team of engineers and third-party partners.
  • Ensure solutions meet appropriate security, governance, risk and compliance standards.

Key Skills & Experience

  • 8+ years' experience in software or AI engineering, including technical leadership.
  • Strong Python and production engineering experience, including CI/CD, testing, containers and version control.
  • Hands-on experience with LLMs, RAG, tool use and AI agents.
  • Experience with Azure or AWS and associated AI services.
  • Strong data skills across SQL, APIs, data pipelines and time-series/market data.
  • Proven experience taking AI prototypes through to production.
  • Strong communication skills and experience working directly with senior commercial or front-office stakeholders.
  • Experience within energy, commodities, trading, shipping, banking or quantitative environments is highly desirable.
