Why HSBC
HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. Guided by our purpose of opening up a world of opportunity, our ambition is to become the world’s most trusted bank globally, putting customers at the heart of everything we do.
The Role
AI 4 Technology sits within the Chief Technology Office (CTO) and is responsible for the strategy and responsible adoption of artificial intelligence across HSBC’s technology environment. As AI for Technology Operations Lead (Director level role), you’ll own the strategy, adoption and governance of AI across Technology Operations, improving governance flow plus effectiveness and efficiency. This is a newly created GCB3 role within CTO Platforms - AI 4 Tech, based in London with direct reports. You’ll align multiple initiatives into a coherent programme, setting the operating model and foundations needed for responsible adoption of AI within Technology Operations in a regulated environment. The focus is on measurable outcomes across service resilience, operational efficiency and technology delivery - supported by clear assurance, controls and monitoring. Success means scaling high-impact solutions while keeping the engineering standards, architecture and governance strong enough to stand up to audit and regulatory scrutiny.
What you'll be doing
- Set the strategy for AI adoption and governance across Technology Operations, improving governance flow, effectiveness and efficiency
- Consolidate duplicated and competing AI initiatives into a single, coherent programme with clear investment priorities and delivery roadmaps
- Shape sustainable AI-powered operating models that support HSBC’s long-term technology transformation ambitions
- Establish governance, assurance, control and model-monitoring frameworks that enable responsible and auditable adoption in a regulated environment
- Build and manage multidisciplinary teams of AI specialists, data scientists, engineers, architects and operational SMEs including developing talent through coaching and career pathways
- Manage Enterprise Architecture across multiple domain areas to deliver programme outcomes without creating avoidable technical debt
- Set engineering standards for the development, testing, deployment, monitoring and retirement of AI solutions including effective MLOps practices
- Govern technology suppliers and delivery partners with accountability for value, quality and control effectiveness
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear decisions, outcomes and recommendations for senior stakeholders

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
