AI Platform Engineer

5 Contract Roles | Principal, Senior and Mid-Level
£475 per day | IR35 Status TBC
Location: Largely Remote, with Travel to Client Site

We’re partnering with an AI-focused consultancy to appoint five experienced AI Platform Engineers for a major platform programme within a high-traffic, heavily regulated consumer environment.

This is an opportunity to help create the shared foundation behind an organisation’s AI capabilities. You’ll build a scalable platform that product and engineering teams can use by default, with the governance, resilience and cost control required within a regulated business. Positions are available at Principal, Senior and Mid-Level, with responsibilities and expectations tailored to each level.

The Opportunity

You’ll work across three core areas of the AI platform:

  • Inference control: Developing the gateway and routing layer connecting engineering teams to multiple LLM providers, including resilient failover and load-shedding capabilities.
  • Orchestration and capability lifecycle: Building tools that allow teams to register, discover, manage and reuse AI capabilities and agents.
  • Trust, safety and governance: Embedding access controls, audit trails, guardrails and cost attribution throughout the platform.

At Principal level, you’ll set the platform’s technical direction and lead architecture discussions with senior engineering stakeholders.

At Senior level, you’ll take end-to-end ownership of a significant platform component and establish the standards required to deliver it successfully.

At Mid-Level, you’ll build and release solutions across the platform alongside experienced engineers, contributing reliable production-quality code.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll play an important role in designing, building and delivering the AI platform by:

  • Building and evolving the API gateway and routing layer connecting teams to multiple LLM providers.
  • Developing failover, load-shedding and resilience capabilities for periods of provider degradation.
  • Designing orchestration, registration and discovery tooling for reusable AI capabilities.
  • Establishing API design, versioning and promotion workflows to move capabilities from experimentation into production.
  • Implementing RBAC and OIDC-based access controls.
  • Supporting secure API key issuance, rotation and revocation.
  • Creating caching layers, routing economics and per-team cost attribution.
  • Monitoring platform adoption, latency, performance and inference costs.
  • Embedding auditability, guardrails and safe defaults into the platform from the outset.
  • Applying high standards across testing, observability and technical documentation.
  • Using evaluation frameworks, golden datasets, structured outputs and fallback paths to manage non-deterministic behaviour.
  • Producing architecture decision records, runbooks and API documentation.
  • Supporting knowledge transfer through code reviews, pairing and close collaboration with internal engineering teams.
  • Planning and prioritising your work, managing changing requirements and raising delivery risks early.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About You

We’re looking for hybrid engineers with experience across software engineering, platform infrastructure and AI systems. You’ll bring strong production experience in at least one area, with credible knowledge across the others.

You will also have:

  • Strong production experience using Python or Go to build, operate and troubleshoot live services.
  • Experience running an API gateway at scale, ideally Kong, Envoy or Apigee.
  • Hands-on integration experience across multiple LLM providers, such as Anthropic, AWS Bedrock, OpenAI or comparable platforms.
  • Experience designing routing and failover approaches across multiple AI providers.
  • Strong knowledge of RBAC, OIDC and API key lifecycle management.
  • Practical AWS cloud infrastructure experience.
  • Experience with Terraform, containers, CI/CD and observability.
  • Knowledge of caching strategies, latency management and inference cost optimisation.
  • Familiarity with MCP or comparable service-registry and tool-discovery patterns.
  • Strong testing, documentation and production engineering standards.
  • The ability to communicate technical cost, risk and delivery trade-offs clearly.
  • Confidence working with platform engineers, architects and senior engineering stakeholders.
  • The judgement to challenge an approach constructively and support your position with evidence.
  • Experience becoming productive quickly within unfamiliar systems and organisations.

Experience delivering within iGaming, financial services or another highly regulated sector would be advantageous, particularly where auditability, data privacy and compliance controls are essential.

Experience working with high-throughput, latency-sensitive production systems and delivering within contract or consulting environments would also be beneficial.

Relevant AWS, Terraform, Machine Learning or Generative AI certifications are useful, although proven delivery experience is more important.

Why Apply?

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a major AI platform programme and build production infrastructure that will be used across a large engineering organisation. In return, you’ll benefit from:

  • A competitive day rate of £475.
  • A largely remote working arrangement.
  • Opportunities available across Principal, Senior and Mid-Level positions.
  • Technically challenging work spanning AI, software engineering and cloud infrastructure.
  • The opportunity to influence how AI capabilities are governed, scaled and adopted within a regulated environment.
  • A collaborative delivery model working closely with experienced engineers and senior stakeholders.

The hiring process will include an initial conversation covering rate, availability and notice period, followed by a capability and technical interview focused on the platform programme.
