The Role
This technical role is aimed at delivering the science needed to make cooperative underwater autonomy viable in Arctic conditions, through the application of AI technologies. This involves both the application of existing AI algorithms and techniques and fundamentally advancing the state of the art. The research centres on multi-agent reinforcement learning for teams of underwater vehicles operating under severe communication and localisation constraints, where coordination must emerge despite limited information.
You’ll be working to push the boundaries of multi-agent autonomy underwater, tackling some of the field’s most difficult challenges and conducting research at the frontier of this technology.
How You Will Make an Impact
- Design and carry out rigorous experimentation and development as part of a small, focused team.
- Apply state-of-the-art machine learning, data science, and autonomy techniques emerging from the Institute, broader academia, and industry to problems faced by our Defence and Security partners.
- Perform rigorous investigations into new algorithms and applications, developing high-quality proof-of-concept outputs which can be deployed in real-world situations.
- Contribute to the design, execution, and analysis of hardware trials, including occasional travel within the UK and internationally.
- Engage with scientists from the theme’s Defence and Security partners to understand their aims and requirements and help identify the problems they face.
- Take a leading role in writing up the project’s research for publication, and present and explain our work via presentations, reports, and workshops.
- Contribute to discussions on project direction and priorities, balancing partner value with research outputs.

About You
- Practical experience of deep learning: designing, training, debugging, and evaluating models, not only applying existing tools. Fluency in Python and a machine learning framework such as PyTorch.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm and ability to rapidly assimilate new computational and algorithmic ideas and techniques at a more than superficial level, including in areas outside your existing specialism, and apply them successfully.
- Research judgement: demonstrated ability to frame a question so that it is tractable, to design experiments that give a clear answer, and to make progress when an approach does not work.
- A postgraduate degree in a field with significant use of machine learning, physics, engineering, robotics, advanced statistical or numerical methods, computer science, or a related discipline.
- An understanding of the importance of good practices for producing reliable software and reproducible analyses.

Terms and Conditions
This post is offered on a permanent contract. The annual salary is £45,505 - £51,241 plus excellent benefits, including flexible working and family-friendly policies.
