AI/ML Research Consultant | Cambridge | Defence & Security

My client, a research and technology consultancy is looking for an AI/ML Research Consultant to join its growing team, working on challenging projects across AI, machine learning and emerging technology within the defence and security sector.

This is a highly varied R&D role, covering everything from early-stage research and proof-of-concepts through to developing and deploying working prototypes.

The role

  • Researching emerging AI/ML techniques and generating new ideas
  • Developing and training ML models for novel applications
  • Rapid prototyping, experimentation and troubleshooting
  • Designing experiments and analysing results
  • Developing recommendations and presenting findings
  • Working directly with clients to understand requirements and deliver technical solutions

About you

  • A strong degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or a related discipline
  • Research experience or demonstrated research potential
  • Strong Python skills and experience with frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras or JAX
  • Experience across a range of ML techniques, or the ability to quickly learn new areas
  • A rigorous, scientific and creative approach to problem solving
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively

Desirable experience

  • Defence and security
  • Edge AI / resource-constrained ML
  • Model optimisation and deployment to specialist hardware
  • CUDA, FPGA or embedded systems
  • Generative AI
  • AI-based or agentic tools
  • Client-facing technical consultancy
