The Opportunity
Role Description
Within BAE Systems Digital Intelligence’s Defence Innovation and Technology, we seek an AI/ML Researcher to join the Knowledge and Semantics team under our Data and Decision Support Capability.
Your work will span cutting-edge AI domains, including:
- Reinforcement learning
- Natural Language Processing (NLP)
- Knowledge graphs and graph ML
- Large Language Model (LLM) applications
- Agentic AI, robotics & autonomy
- Computer vision
- AI-driven RF, EW, sonar and acoustics
You’ll collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams, tackle high-impact projects for global clients, and engage with academic partners while advancing your research interests.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead novel research in defined AI specialisations
- Technical delivery leadership for small project teams
- Develop prototypes and PoCs for real-world applications
- Own tasks in projects, ensuring high standards and on-time delivery
- Present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Essential Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- A PhD in a relevant field (e.g., AI, ML, data science, computational linguistics, or related domain)
- Proficiency in Python for software development
- Experience with ML frameworks:
- TensorFlow
- PyTorch
- LLMs, knowledge graphs, or graph ML expertise (demonstrated via publications, industry work, or open-source projects)
- Specific areas of interest evolve as priorities*:
- NLP (e.g., information extraction, text mining, entity linking)
- LLM applications tailored to defence challenges
- Graph ML (taxonomy of tasks, graph databases, algorithms)
Desirable Skills
- Knowledge representation/ontology design with semantic AI reasoning ties to LLMs
- Familiarity with graph ML libraries (e.g., PyTorch-Geometric, PyKeen) and Knowledge Graph toolkits (e.g., Neo4j)
