MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Anaesthetics / Recovery Staff Nurse is responsible for providing safe, effective and compassionate care to patients undergoing procedures requiring anaesthesia and recovery support. The post holder works as part of the multidisciplinary theatre team, assisting anaesthetists during the perioperative phase, supporting patients throughout the anaesthetic process, and providing high-quality postoperative recovery care until patients are clinically stable and ready for transfer or discharge.
The role requires the post holder to contribute to the safe preparation of patients, equipment, medicines and clinical environments, maintain accurate clinical documentation, recognise and respond to patient deterioration, and ensure that all care is delivered in accordance with professional standards, clinic policies and regulatory requirements.
ANAESTHETIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare the anaesthetic room, theatre and associated equipment before the operating list begins.
- Assist with daily checks of anaesthetic machines, monitoring equipment, suction, oxygen, airway equipment and emergency equipment.
- Support the anaesthetist in the preparation and delivery of anaesthesia.
- Ensure patients have completed required admission and preoperative checks.
- Verify documentation and consent availability and escalate concerns.
- Assist with patient identification, positioning, monitoring and transfer.
- Maintain observation of patients during the anaesthetic phase.
- Assist during emergency situations.

RECOVERY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive patients from theatre with an appropriate structured handover.
- Undertake and record postoperative observations.
- Monitor patients closely and identify deterioration.
- Escalate abnormalities promptly.
- Administer prescribed medicines within competence.
- Support pain, nausea and symptom management.
- Ensure patients meet recovery and discharge criteria.
- Maintain accurate recovery documentation.
PATIENT CARE AND SAFETY
- Promote dignity, privacy, respect and compassionate care.
- Communicate effectively with patients and MDT.
- Support infection prevention and safeguarding.
- Participate in theatre safety procedures.
MEDICINES MANAGEMENT
- Handle and administer medicines within professional scope.
- Participate in medicines checking procedures.
- Report medicine incidents and discrepancies.
- Assist in monitoring medicine stock.
CLINICAL ENVIRONMENT AND EQUIPMENT
- Maintain safe and organised anaesthetic and recovery areas.
- Ensure required equipment and consumables are available.
- Report faulty equipment.
- Support stock management and environmental checks.
TEAMWORK AND PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in training, audit and quality improvement activities.
- Maintain professional communication and behaviour.
- Escalate patient safety concerns without delay.

GOVERNANCE, RECORDS AND QUALITY ASSURANCE
- Maintain accurate clinical records.
- Complete documentation and checklists.
- Report incidents, complaints and safeguarding concerns.
- Participate in audits and quality improvement.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain current NMC registration.
- Maintain required mandatory training, DBS and life-support certification.
- Participate in appraisal and continuing professional development.
AUTHORITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
This is a registered clinical practitioner role. The post holder is responsible and accountable for the safe delivery of care within their professional scope of practice and may raise concerns or stop their own actions where patient safety is compromised. The post holder does not hold delegated managerial authority but is expected to escalate concerns and support safe clinical and operational practice within the department.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work within professional registration, competence, clinic policy and delegated authority at all times.
- Participate in any agreed out-of-hours or on-call arrangements.
- Undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the role.
- Comply with health and safety, confidentiality, equality and data protection requirements.
