Company Description

The Griff Investment Fund is the first student-run investment fund in the North of England. Based at the University of York and entirely student-led, it is a long-only equity fund that manages over £25,000 as part of the University's endowment. The Fund grew out of the York Investment Fund, a virtual fund created in 2011 by York alumni and the Fund's founders. It was established with real capital in 2013 by York alumni and Paul Griffiths, former Global Head of Institutional Business at HSBC Asset Management and former Chief Investment Officer of Fixed Income and Credit at First State Investments. The Fund hosts SMIF|UK, the annual UK Conference of Student-Managed Investment Funds. Its mission is to outperform its benchmark, educate analysts in fundamental valuation and risk management, and equip them with the transferable skills to build successful careers.

Role Description

The Fund is now accepting applications from a select group of candidates to join its seven thematic sector teams for the 2026/27 academic year:

  • Cloud Computing & Software: artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and productivity software
  • Consumer Discretionary & Staples: consumer goods, retail and consumer services
  • Financials & Real Estate: banks, insurers, asset managers, REITs and property developers
  • Green Technology & Related Systems: climate technology, energy and associated capital goods
  • Healthcare: pharmaceuticals and health services
  • Materials & Industrials: manufacturing, capital goods, raw materials and commodities
  • Thematic & Tactical: long-term thematic, geographic and macroeconomic positions that complement the wider portfolio

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The Role

Analysts work within a sector team, identifying, researching and presenting investment opportunities to the Fund. Every proposal is scrutinised and put to a Fund-wide vote, and only the most compelling ideas are allocated investment capital. The role is opportunity-driven rather than bound to fixed daily responsibilities. Those who take initiative will find considerable scope to shape the Fund's portfolio and their own progression within it.

Risk and Equity Analyst Positions

The Fund is recruiting for both analyst positions, Risk and Equity. Both are embedded within the sector teams and are integral to the Fund's investment decision-making process.

Risk Analysts

Risk Analysts assess the quantitative and qualitative risk metrics of every proposed investment, so that each proposal is rigorously tested before it enters the portfolio. Unlike Equity Analysts, who focus on individual companies, Risk Analysts develop a view across the Fund's holdings and progress into portfolio and sector-level risk management. The position is suited to candidates with strengths in mathematics, coding, and data analysis and interpretation, skills that are increasingly sought after across the financial industry. Risk Analysts have traditionally come from Actuarial Science and Mathematics, although this is not a requirement.

Equity Analysts

Equity Analysts identify and research investment opportunities within their sector, with the aim of finding value the market has overlooked. They analyse company fundamentals, competitive positioning and industry dynamics, and build financial models and valuations to support their conclusions. Equity Analysts develop investment theses and defend them before the Fund, where every proposal faces scrutiny before capital is committed. The position is suited to candidates with a strong interest in businesses and markets, and the conviction to argue a position under challenge.

Candidates who are unsure which position best suits them may indicate that they are open to either role in their application. The Fund will discuss both positions with candidates during the recruitment process.

Development Opportunities

  • Practical experience in investment research, risk assessment and market analysis
  • Development of presentation skills through sector and Fund-wide pitches
  • Participation in external stock pitch competitions
  • A clear pathway to leadership positions within the Fund
  • Substantive experience for professional applications and interviews
  • Access to the Fund's alumni network

Candidate Profile

Applicants must be students currently enrolled at the University of York. The Fund welcomes applications from all degree disciplines and believes a diversity of perspectives makes for stronger investment decisions. Prior experience is not required. The Fund prioritises motivation and a willingness to learn. Candidates should work well in a team and be ready to contribute ideas.

Application Process

Admission to the Fund is competitive.

  • Submission of a short video and an up-to-date CV
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a stock pitch interview, with further details to follow.

Application deadline: Applications will close at 11:59pm on Sunday 11 October 2026.
