Powertica Commodities UK Ltd is looking for an Analytics Engineer to join our Data and Analytics team in Edinburgh. This is a unique opportunity to build and run the pipelines, tooling and models that our trading desks rely on every day, working in Python, Airflow, Docker and Azure alongside experienced engineers, analysts and traders in one of the UK's most dynamic energy trading businesses.
From day one you'll have real responsibility and real ownership. Our team is small, fast-moving and deliberately unbureaucratic, closer to a start-up than a corporate function, so good ideas get built rather than queued. You'll take projects through their whole lifecycle, from a conversation with a trader to a production system, and see the commercial impact of your work the same day. You'll be supported by colleagues with a strong record of developing early-career talent, with mentoring and scope to grow.
We're looking for one to two years' commercial experience in a technical data role, or a recent graduate in a numerate or computing discipline with demonstrable hands-on experience of this stack. This role is based in our Edinburgh office, working alongside traders, analysts and other colleagues in offices across Europe.

Working with teams across the UK and Europe, the data function within Powertica Commodities UK develops models and tools to support trading in energy markets. Supporting every trading desk in Edinburgh — Shift/Dispatch, Prompt, Commercial Imbalance and Continental Spec — as well as colleagues and trading desks in London and Europe.
The analytics engineering role will involve:
- Developing and maintaining data ingestion, processing and modelling pipelines, orchestrated with Airflow
- Supporting analysis and model development alongside analysts and traders, from exploratory work through to production
- Managing deployment of prototype and production code using Docker and Azure
- Analysis and prototyping of decision support tools, and hardening the proofs of concept that prove their value
- Owning data quality, monitoring and documentation for the datasets the desks rely on

It is expected that the Analytics Engineer will take ownership of most or all of the lifecycle of a project, with real scope to bring new ideas forward and shape the tooling as the team grows.
Requirements
Location: This role is based in our Edinburgh office.
Hours: Full-time, 40hrs per week
Education: Educated to degree level in a STEM or similar discipline from a top tier university.
Skills
Essential Skills:
- Background in coding and data — a numerate or computing degree, or equivalent commercial experience, with demonstrable experience of using code to analyse data and solve problems
- Strong experience of the Python data stack in a commercial or academic setting
- Experience using SQL and relational databases (Postgres or comparable)
- Experience of cloud platforms and cloud-based storage (Azure or comparable)
- Version control, release and deployment CI/CD tools (Gitlab/Github/Devops etc.)
- Containerisation and deployment of workloads (Docker or comparable)
- Ability to quickly learn new concepts and domain knowledge

Desirable Skills
- Orchestration of pipelines and models (Airflow or comparable, e.g. Dagster, Prefect, Azure Data Factory)
- Experience using LLM tools for development and rapid prototyping
- Modelling orchestration and deployment / ML Ops
Experience
Essential Experience
- 1–2 years' commercial experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, data science or a comparable technical role — or a recent graduate with real demonstrable hands-on experience of the stack above (e.g., through placements, internships or funded research)
- Working in a collaborative team, either in a commercial or postgraduate setting
- Ability to track and plan project activities, while managing own workload
- Evidence of active personal development
- Experience collaborating with adjacent teams (e.g., data engineers, BI developers, domain experts or other colleagues) to deliver projects
Desirable Experience
- Experience in energy, technology, finance, insurance or other data-intensive industries
- Energy or finance markets exposure — power, gas, renewables, imbalance or dispatch
- Commercial experience of deployed timeseries forecasting models
Travel
Ad Hoc, expected to attend training courses, industry events and networking opportunities to maintain skillset and grow our data capability
