About The Role

We are seeking passionate and talented Android Engineers to join our dynamic team at Engine by Starling. As part of our engineering team, you will contribute to the development and enhancement of our award-winning Android application and internal tooling. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on building new features and products from scratch, ensuring they are configurable, scalable, and maintainable. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and other engineers, to deliver high-quality solutions that impact banking services globally. The ideal candidate is self-driven, curious, and eager to own projects from conception through deployment, continuously seeking to improve both the codebase and user experience.

In this role, you will be empowered to make technical decisions, share knowledge with colleagues, and help shape the future of our Android platform. You will have the chance to work with the latest technologies, contribute to SDK development for international clients, and participate in a culture that values innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning. The position offers a hybrid working model, allowing flexibility to work both remotely and from our offices in London, Manchester, or Cardiff, fostering in-person collaboration when needed.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in Android development with a solid understanding of Kotlin and Java. Experience working with modern Android development tools and libraries such as Compose, Retrofit, Realm, Dagger, and Coroutines is essential. Familiarity with building SDKs, maintaining libraries, and working on internationalization projects is highly desirable. A keen eye for security, accessibility, and user-centric design is crucial, as well as the ability to write clean, maintainable, and testable code.

Candidates should have experience with automated testing frameworks like Espresso and JUnit, and a good understanding of CI/CD processes. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team are vital. Prior exposure to working with cross-platform development, XML layouts, and migrating legacy codebases will be advantageous. We value individuals who are proactive, curious, and committed to delivering high-quality solutions that meet user needs and business goals.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of our Android banking app, ensuring a seamless user experience and high performance.
  • Design, build, and deploy new features and products from scratch, with a focus on configurability and scalability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand requirements, propose solutions, and deliver high-quality code.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and continuous integration processes to ensure stability and quality.
  • Share knowledge and best practices with team members, fostering a culture of learning and improvement.
  • Maintain and improve existing codebases, including migrating from older libraries and technologies.
  • Ensure all features and updates adhere to security standards, accessibility guidelines, and performance benchmarks.
  • Engage in regular team meetings, retrospectives, and planning sessions to align on goals and deliverables.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously enhance our Android platform.
