Advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Technician / Specialist Subject Matter Expert (SME) Job Description
Altrad Integrity Services are currently looking for an experienced ANDT Specialist SME to provide specialist inspection services and technical support across client projects.
Key Deliverables
- To develop, apply and optimise advanced NDT techniques and procedures in accordance with industry, company and client standards.
- To interpret and evaluate inspection results in accordance with applicable standards, codes, specifications and client requirements.
- To liaise directly with clients to clarify inspection scopes, technical requirements and resolve technical queries.
- To supervise, mentor and provide technical guidance to Level 2 and junior NDT technicians across relevant NDT methods.
- To adhere to all Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) requirements and promote a strong safety culture.
- To ensure all inspection activities comply with accreditation and quality requirements, including ISO/UKAS 17020 where applicable.
- To lead and participate in technical meetings with customers, providing specialist recommendations and expert guidance on advanced NDT methods and inspection results.
- To prepare, review and validate specialist NDT procedures, techniques and work instructions, ensuring compliance with relevant requirements.
- To select, set up and verify NDT equipment, probes and scanning systems for complex inspection applications.
- To review and monitor inspection processes, procedures and documentation to ensure continual compliance, quality and improvement.
- To identify and troubleshoot equipment or process issues and provide timely technical solutions.
- To assess, coach and validate the competency of field technicians in accordance with company and industry standards.
- To advise on and implement NDT best practices to support asset integrity and risk mitigation.
- To undertake field and technical office duties as required, including work on client sites both onshore and offshore.

Key Requirements / Qualifications

- Recognised Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications in multiple advanced NDT techniques such as Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD), Tube Inspection, Guided Wave, QSR and Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL).
- Strong knowledge and practical application of international NDT, ultrasonic and equipment standards.
- Proven experience using a variety of flaw detectors, probes and scanning systems.
- Experience within the oil & gas, energy, transportation infrastructure or other relevant industrial sectors.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, diagrams and equipment schematics.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications and relevant NDT software tools.
- Proven ability to work independently in the field and supervise and guide other technicians.
- Additional specialist NDT experience in techniques such as Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC), Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL), Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) and Guided Wave Tubing Inspection would be advantageous.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and planning skills.
- Good understanding of asset production systems, materials, corrosion and degradation mechanisms.
- Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively to meet strict project deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail, reliability and professional approach to compliance and continuous improvement.
- Proven ability to lead, motivate, coach and develop junior team members in technical competence and safety awareness.
- Must be willing and able to travel to various project and customer locations, including onshore and offshore sites.
- Must meet all relevant client, company and site training, competency and certification requirements.
