Help Free UK Genealogy turn our Trustees’ Annual Report into a clear, accessible and engaging PDF/document
We’re looking for a design volunteer to shape the layout, visuals and readability of an important public-facing charity report.
What difference will you make?
Our Annual Report is one of the ways we explain our work publicly. It records our progress, challenges, finances and charitable impact, but it also needs to reflect the care and commitment behind Free UK Genealogy.
A well-designed report will help us communicate more clearly with trustees, volunteers, supporters, funders and members of the public. It will make the report easier to read, easier to navigate and more useful as a public-facing document.
This role will also help us take a step forward in how we present ourselves. Free UK Genealogy has a rich story to tell millions of records, thousands of volunteers over time, long-running public benefit, and new projects in development. Good design can help make that story visible without oversimplifying it.
Your work would give us a finished document that we can share with confidence. It may also give us a practical design approach that we can build on in future years.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for someone with a good eye for layout, readability and visual communication. You might have professional design experience, voluntary experience, or a portfolio of thoughtful design work.

You may be a good fit if you have experience or interest in:
- designing PDFs, reports, brochures or similar documents
- using tools such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, Figma or similar
- making text-heavy information clearer and more engaging
- designing layouts that support readability
- creating or adapting simple graphics, charts, tables or icons
- thinking about accessibility, including contrast, font size and clear hierarchy
- working from draft content and shaping it into a finished publication
We would especially value someone who is careful, practical and able to work with feedback. The report needs to look better, but it also needs to remain accurate, calm and credible.
An interest in family history, archives, charities or public access to records would be welcome, but it is not essential.

What will you be doing?
Free UK Genealogy is a charity that provides free online access to family history records through FreeBMD, FreeREG, FreeCEN and FreePRO. Our volunteers create high-quality transcriptions from public records, helping people explore personal, family and community histories without paywalls.
Each year, we produce a Trustees’ Annual Report as part of our formal reporting. The content is important, but it has usually been presented in a fairly plain, text-heavy format. This year, we would like to turn it into a more polished document that is clearer, more visual and easier to read, while still feeling professional, trustworthy and appropriate for a charity.

We are looking for a volunteer to help us take the report from draft content to a finished designed document. This could include:
- creating a clean, consistent layout for the report
- designing a cover and internal page layouts
- improving readability through spacing, typography and page structure
- suggesting where charts, tables, icons, maps, screenshots or simple graphics could help
- making sensible use of existing Free UK Genealogy design assets
- helping us present statistics and project updates clearly
- preparing a final document suitable for sharing with trustees, supporters, volunteers and the public
- providing editable source files so we can learn from and reuse the design approach in future
This is the first time we have taken this approach. We do have an earlier unrealised draft design that we can share as a starting point, but we are open to fresh ideas.
The work is not just about making the report glossy or flashy. It is about helping readers understand who we are, what we have done, and the difference our volunteers make.
