Role: Nurse Practitioner (NP)
Reports To: Clinical Director / Practice Manager
Governance & Regulation: Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ)
Location: Primary Care / Community / Hospital Care, New Zealand
Position Purpose
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides expert, autonomous clinical leadership and advanced primary or specialist care to patients and whānau. Working within their NCNZ-approved scope of practice, the NP conducts advanced clinical assessments, diagnoses conditions, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes treatments, and manages complete episodes of care.
The NP collaborates within an interdisciplinary team while honoring Te Tiriti o Waitangi to achieve equitable health outcomes across Aotearoa.
Key Responsibilities
1. Advanced Clinical Practice & Prescribing
- Perform holistic physical and psychosocial health assessments for complex patient populations.
- Formulate clinical diagnoses using advanced reasoning and evidence-based practice.
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic laboratory and imaging tests.
- Autonomously prescribe medications, appliances, and therapeutic interventions within their authorized scope of practice.
- Manage chronic conditions, acute illnesses, and complex multi-morbidities.
- Refer patients directly to secondary/tertiary care, specialists, and allied health professionals.

2. Cultural Safety & Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- Embed the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi into everyday clinical decision-making to reduce health inequities for Māori.
- Provide culturally safe, holistic, and whānau-centered care across diverse communities.
3. Leadership, Education & Consultancy
- Provide expert clinical advice and consultation to registered nurses, general practitioners, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Lead quality improvement projects, clinical audits, and model-of-care developments.
- Mentor and supervise nursing staff, postgraduate students, and intern NPs.

Essential Qualifications & Registration
Education: Master’s Degree in Nursing (or equivalent NCNZ-approved NP pathway).
Registration: Current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) in the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice with prescribing rights.
Practising Certificate: Current Annual Practising Certificate (APC) with no restrictions.
Experience: Minimum 4+ years of advanced clinical practice in the relevant specialty.
Key Competencies
- Expert clinical diagnostic reasoning and pharmacological knowledge.
- Strong understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand health legislation and funding structures.
- Proficiency with Patient Management Systems (e.g., Medtech, Indici).
- Excellent inter-professional communication and negotiation skills.
