Primary Function

The General Manager, Europe & UKI is responsible for setting the long-term vision, influencing global strategy, and leading end-to-end commercial execution to build, scale, and transform a high-growth business across Europe and United Kingdom and Ireland. The role is accountable for establishing Europe and UKI as a global growth engine for APOC, delivering sustained double-digit revenue and margin expansion, shaping enterprise strategy through Europe-driven insights, and driving operational excellence across all commercial functions.

This role oversees a highly complex commercial region spanning 30+ countries with diverse regulatory frameworks, reimbursement systems, maturity levels, and competitive dynamics, requiring exceptional strategic agility and cross-market orchestration.

This position reports to the General Manager, International Markets and serves as a senior member of the APOC International Leadership Team, contributing directly to cross-regional strategic governance and decision-making.

Major Responsibilities

  • Oversee one of APOC’s most complex regional portfolios, operating across 35+ markets with varying regulatory regimes, healthcare infrastructures, and economic conditions, requiring advanced leadership across scale, governance, and multi-country transformation
  • Establish and communicate a compelling vision and long-term enterprise-aligned strategy to deliver sustainable, profitable growth (20%+ annually).
  • Identify and prioritize Key Countries as primary growth drivers; define entry, expansion, and exit strategies and allocate resources accordingly.
  • Develop and oversee fact-based, country-specific strategic and operating plans with clearly defined KPIs and dashboards to ensure execution accountability.
  • Anticipate business, market, regulatory, and execution risks; proactively develop mitigation plans and lead regional risk governance.
  • Lead complex business and financial analyses to inform enterprise strategy and improve market share, revenue, and profitability.
  • Build, develop, and retain a high-performing, diverse leadership team; foster an inclusive, high-accountability, performance-driven culture and strengthen succession depth for Director- and GM-level roles whilst ensuring high levels of engagement.
  • Lead and inspire country sales organizations to achieve financial and strategic objectives across multiple markets of significant scale.
  • Ensure effective customer segmentation, targeting, sales force size, structure, capability, and deployment aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Partner with Global Commercial teams to design and deploy modernized, pay-for-performance incentive plans that drive regional acceleration.
  • Ensure sales teams are well-trained to drive adoption across target clinical segments and are enabled with modern commercial tools and insights.
  • Own full P&L accountability for APOC Europe/UKI Commercial Operations, ensuring disciplined capital deployment and predictable, investor-grade performance.
  • Drive forecasting accuracy, financial planning (rLBE), integrated business planning, and multi-year growth planning.
  • Identify and execute gross margin improvement initiatives; proactively manage risks to sales, profitability, and portfolio mix.
  • Define and execute a differentiated customer experience strategy that delivers superior service levels and high Net Promoter Scores across the region.
  • Ensure customer issues and complaints are managed in accordance with policy, regulation, and quality expectations.
  • Guide country and area marketing teams in market segmentation, prioritization, and portfolio optimization to maximize commercial impact.
  • Develop and execute strategic and tactical marketing plans across key care settings (e.g., Emergency, Critical Care, CVOR, Outpatient).
  • Partner with Global teams to integrate customer insights into global portfolio strategy, pipeline prioritization, and launch planning.
  • Lead country-specific and region-wide launch planning for pipeline innovations, ensuring Europe readiness and accelerated adoption.
  • Promote a “test-and-learn” culture focused on speed, measurement, refinement, and continuous improvement across the commercial engine.
  • Monitor competitive, policy, and market dynamics; proactively address threats and capitalize on opportunities at country and regional level.
  • Lead pricing strategy for the current portfolio in alignment with global frameworks, ensuring price discipline and optimized value capture.
  • Understand, influence, and shape reimbursement landscapes across Key Countries, engaging with health authorities and national payer bodies as needed.
  • Partner with Global teams on pricing and reimbursement strategies for new assays and innovations.
  • Ensure timely completion of all quality, compliance, and ethics training across the organization.
  • Ensure full compliance with Abbott Quality standards, local regulations, and external requirements.
  • Partner with Regulatory Affairs to secure and maintain product approvals across Europe.
  • Support internal and external audits; lead remediation efforts where required and oversee strong regional governance and internal controls.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Science, or Engineering.
  • MBA, PhD, or MD from a top-tier institution strongly preferred.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required. Additional languages would be an advantage.

Background

  • 18+ years of progressive commercial leadership experience within healthcare (medical devices and/or IVD strongly preferred).
  • Proven experience as a General Manager, Country Manager, or Franchise Head of a $40M+
  • Proven experience launching new products successfully.
  • Demonstrated success working across developed markets and influencing global strategy.
  • Strong strategic, analytical, and financial acumen with a track record of translating insights into high-impact execution.
  • Entrepreneurial, hands-on leadership style with comfort navigating complexity, ambiguity, and large-scale transformation.
  • Exceptional communication, influencing, and enterprise change leadership skills.
  • High ethical standards, strong cultural sensitivity, and a servant-leader mindset.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
