Application Engineer
Full-Time Exempt
The primary responsibility of the person in this position will be to assist and support existing and potential customers in the selection, application and commissioning of the proper precision gearing products that deliver the optimum solution for the customer’s machine and process applications. To further leverage their product knowledge, this individual will organize, create and provide the information, tools and training necessary for the effective sales and support of products in the market.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide answers to technical questions from distributors, OEMs and end users, as well as sales, customer service and other department personnel concerning the proper and optimum sizing and selection of the full range of gearing products offered.
- Analyze customer requirements, then develop and write formal technical specifications and proposals for the application and integration of the optimum products to meet their needs.
- Prepare formal presentation material and assist in giving product demonstrations and presentations at customer sites, trade show exhibitions and on-site at our facility when customers visit. Occasionally travel on joint-calls with or without sales force to facilitate sales or post-sales cycle.
- Investigate competitive product features and performance to identify technical strengths and weaknesses as they relate to our respective products and solutions.
- Evaluate changes to designs, implement adaptations and develop appropriate supportive documents for existing as well as new products within the company portfolio. Communicate as needed with global headquarters in Japan to facilitate the approval of new products or product modifications.
- Create and maintain bills of material; change BOMs as needed.
- Maintain repair parts drawings and modifications requirements.
- Work with engineering and sales groups to recognize and diagnose chronic problems and failure mechanisms and provide solutions to improve product quality and performance.
- Interact with marketing services department in the technological and informational development of product catalogs and literature, instruction and operating manuals and the company website.
- Properly document and submit warranty/repair reports and cost to enhance efficiency, profitability, and excellent customer service.
- Participate in meetings, seminars and training sessions to stay appraised of new developments in the field. Acquire new technology skills through attendance at in-house training seminars as well as commercial or academic training courses.
- Maintain discretion with and confidentiality of all company related information.

Qualifications
- Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts, including calculus, differential equations, analytic geometry, trigonometry, algebra, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions, to engineering and application solutions.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, 3D modeling software, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, and Microsoft Office applications. Willingness to learn proprietary sizing and selection software.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical information and collaborate with customers, distributors, suppliers, management, and coworkers through in-person, telephone, and written communications.
- Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete projects.
- Business-level proficiency in spoken and written Japanese to effectively communicate with colleagues, customers, suppliers, and headquarters personnel in Japan, and to review, interpret, prepare, and explain technical and business documentation in Japanese and English.
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required to support business needs.
- Ability and willingness to successfully complete an approximately three-month training program at the company’s headquarters in Japan as required to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline and at least three (3) years of experience in a related industry; or
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the gearing industry; or
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the gearing industry; or
- A degree or formal education in gear technology or a closely related field.

A bachelor’s degree is not required for candidates who possess significant education or demonstrated experience in gear technology or gear design.
