Applications Engineer (Sheffield) - £40-50k Basic

Are you an experienced engineer with a background in automation, process control, PLC and SCADA systems looking to take the next step in your career? Perhaps you’re currently working for a systems integrator and are ready to move into an applications, solutions or solution-architect type role? This could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.

Reporting to the Senior Proposals Manager, you’ll play a key role in developing innovative technical solutions and high-quality proposals for a diverse range of customers. From PLC and SCADA projects through to digital solutions and full turnkey systems, no two proposals will be the same.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll work closely with customers, sales teams, suppliers and engineering colleagues to understand requirements and develop solutions that meet — and exceed — expectations.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing detailed technical proposals for PLC, SCADA, automation and process control solutions
  • Working on projects ranging from system upgrades, training and service-level agreements through to digital solutions, management information systems and full turnkey solutions
  • Defining the initial engineering solution and preparing accurate estimates
  • Producing quotations and tenders, including supporting technical information
  • Creating detailed quotation cost spreadsheets covering hardware, software and engineering requirements
  • Obtaining supplier pricing and liaising with engineering teams to establish accurate timescales and engineering resource requirements
  • Working closely with customers and sales teams to fully understand their technical and commercial requirements
  • Undertaking customer site visits where required
  • Building and maintaining strong, professional customer relationships
  • Responding promptly and professionally to customer requirements

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
