THE ROLE
We are looking for an Application Engineer to lead the characterization, validation, and customer enablement of our high-speed SerDes and TIA products for optical communication systems. In this role, you will own the definition and development of test benches and characterization setups, from bring-up planning through to datasheet-quality measurement and customer-facing support. You will work closely with analog design, verification, product, and customer teams to ensure our Chiplets are thoroughly characterized, well-documented, and successfully integrated into our clients' advanced communication systems.
This role is ideal for a senior engineer with deep hands-on lab expertise in high-speed electrical and optical testing, strong SerDes and TIA domain knowledge, and the ability to bridge between silicon behaviour in the lab and design intent. You should be comfortable working across the full product lifecycle, from silicon bring-up and characterization through to customer integration, debug, and application support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Characterization Strategy: Own and drive the characterization and validation strategy for high-speed SerDes and TIA products from silicon bring-up through to production release, ensuring test plans are technically rigorous, repeatable, and aligned with datasheet and customer requirements.
- Test Bench Development: Architect, build, and maintain advanced electrical and optical test benches, including high-speed instrumentation (BERTs, real-time and sampling oscilloscopes, VNAs, optical sources, modulators, and power meters), fixtures, and evaluation boards.
- Characterization Setup & Automation: Develop characterization setups and automated measurement flows covering PVT sweeps, corner analysis, and performance envelopes, balancing measurement accuracy with throughput and scalability.
- Optical Communication Testing: Lead optical link testing and characterization, including sensitivity, OMA, extinction ratio, TDECQ, BER, and eye-diagram analysis across relevant data rates and modulation formats (NRZ, PAM4).
- SerDes & TIA Performance Validation: Characterize key behaviours and features, including TX/RX performance, jitter decomposition, equalization and adaptation, link training, BIST, PRBS, loopback, error injection, and stress/robustness scenarios; validate TIA gain, bandwidth, noise, and linearity performance.
- Debug & Root-Cause Analysis: Analyze and debug complex silicon and system-level issues involving signal integrity, jitter, noise, clocking, optical/electrical interaction, and firmware/hardware behaviour, correlating lab measurements with simulation and design data.
- Silicon Bring-Up: Drive silicon bring-up activities, including board-level debug, initial functional validation, and model-to-silicon correlation with design and verification teams.
- Customer Enablement: Support customers integrating our SerDes and TIA Chiplets, including evaluation board support, application guidance, on-site or remote debug, and development of application notes and characterization reports.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with analog design, AMS verification, architecture, product, and operations teams to feed lab findings back into design, verification, and test coverage.
- Technical Leadership: Mentor and technically guide junior engineers and technicians, helping raise the overall quality, consistency, and maturity of lab practices, documentation, and measurement methodology across the team.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Must-have Technical Skills:
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field
- 8–10+ years of experience in application engineering, silicon characterization, post-silicon validation, or high-speed product engineering
- Deep understanding of high-speed SerDes architectures, including TX/RX data paths, PLLs, CDRs, clocking, equalization, jitter, and signal integrity concepts
- Strong hands-on experience with TIAs and optical front-end components (photodiodes, laser drivers, modulators) and their key performance parameters
- Proven experience in optical communication testing, including BER, sensitivity, TDECQ, eye-diagram, and jitter measurements at high data rates (NRZ and PAM4)
- Strong track record architecting and building test benches and characterization setups for high-speed electrical and optical measurements
- Hands-on expertise with lab instrumentation such as BERTs, high-bandwidth oscilloscopes (real-time and sampling), VNAs, spectrum analyzers, and optical test equipment
- Experience with characterization across PVT corners, datasheet specification, and production test correlation
- Strong debugging skills at silicon, board, and system level, including signal integrity and power integrity issues
- Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python (preferred), Perl, or Tcl for instrument control (e.g., PyVISA, SCPI), data collection, and analysis
- Ability to automate measurement flows, result analysis, reporting, and characterization dashboards
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with SerDes or optical interconnect standards such as PCIe, Ethernet (100G/200G/400G/800G), CEI/OIF electrical interfaces, or coherent optics
- Experience correlating lab measurements with MATLAB or Python system models and simulation data
- Experience in customer-facing roles supporting IP, chiplet, or component integration
- Exposure to chiplet-based architectures, co-packaged optics, or high-speed interconnect ecosystems
- Experience with evaluation board design, high-speed PCB debug, or fixture de-embedding techniques
- Experience defining lab methodology and infrastructure improvements across multiple projects or teams
