We’re expanding
FIG3D is expanding its advanced manufacturing capability in South Yorkshire, investing in new equipment, technologies, and people as we increase our capacity to support Defence and other high-performance industries.
As part of that expansion, we’re looking for a hands-on Applications Engineer who can take a customer or engineering requirement and turn it into something we can manufacture. This is not a desk-based engineering role.
We need someone comfortable working directly with CAD, additive manufacturing, laser cutting, and UV printing equipment — developing applications, preparing files, setting machines, running trials, and improving the process through to repeatable production.
The role
You’ll work across design, DfM, prototyping, and production, helping us determine the best manufacturing route for components and assemblies. One day you could be optimising an FDM component, the next preparing a part for SLS or SLA, modifying CAD for manufacture, setting up a fibre laser cutting job, or producing a UV-printed component.
You’ll work closely with the founders and wider technical team as we continue building FIG3D's manufacturing capability.
We specifically want to hear from you if you have experience with:
- 3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing – practical experience operating and troubleshooting FDM/FFF, SLS, and/or SLA technologies.
- CAD – confident creating, modifying, and preparing 3D models and engineering files for manufacture.
- Design for Manufacture (DfM) – able to assess designs and make practical changes for additive and conventional manufacturing processes.
- Fibre Laser Cutting – experience preparing files, setting parameters, operating equipment, and producing accurate sheet-metal components.
- UV Printing – experience setting up and operating UV flatbed/direct-to-object printing equipment would be highly valuable.
- Materials & Process Selection – understanding how material, geometry, orientation, tolerances, and manufacturing method affect the finished component.
- Production Problem Solving – able to diagnose failures, adjust processes, and get equipment producing consistently.

Experience across all of these technologies would be ideal, but we are also interested in strong candidates with deep additive manufacturing and CAD/DfM experience who are capable of quickly learning our other processes.
What you'll be doing
You'll take applications from CAD to finished component, including:
- Reviewing customer drawings, CAD files, and technical requirements.
- Applying DfM principles and recommending the best manufacturing process.
- Preparing and modifying CAD models for production.
- Setting up and operating FDM, SLS, and SLA 3D printing equipment.
- Preparing jobs and operating fibre laser cutting equipment.
- Supporting and operating UV printing equipment.
- Selecting materials, process parameters, build orientation, and production methods.
- Running prototypes, trials, and validation builds.
- Troubleshooting print, laser, material, and manufacturing issues.
- Developing fixtures, jigs, and production aids.
- Improving quality, repeatability, lead time, and manufacturing cost.
- Documenting manufacturing processes and creating repeatable production routes.
- Helping commission and introduce new equipment as FIG3D continues to expand.
- Supporting production as products move from prototype into low-volume and scalable manufacture.
What we're looking for
You might currently be an Applications Engineer, Additive Manufacturing Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, CAD Engineer, AM Technician, or Production Engineer. Job title matters less to us than practical capability.
We want someone who can demonstrate that they have actually designed, set up, operated, tested, and improved manufacturing processes.
A strong candidate will have:
- Practical 3D-printing experience.
- Good CAD capability.
- A strong understanding of DfM.
- Experience taking components from digital design through to physical manufacture.
- Confidence working directly with manufacturing equipment.
- Good understanding of engineering drawings, tolerances, and production documentation.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- An interest in advanced manufacturing technologies and materials.
- The initiative to work in a growing SME where you'll be expected to get involved and make things happen.

Experience in Defence, aerospace, UAVs, composites, engineering polymers, advanced materials, electronics enclosures, or low-volume/high-value manufacturing would be particularly useful.
