About The Role
Our client in Sheffield is seeking a talented Applications Engineer to join their dynamic team. This role offers an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about engineering, especially within manufacturing environments that involve complex geometrically precise components. As an Applications Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in supporting new product development, process optimization, and manufacturing efficiencies. You will oversee the entire product lifecycle—from request for quotation (RFQ) and design for manufacturing (DFM) to production prove-out—ensuring that operational goals are met while maintaining high-quality standards. The position requires a flexible approach, balancing technical expertise with project management skills to support both engineering and operational teams effectively. This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive engineer eager to make a tangible impact on product innovation and manufacturing excellence.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Candidates currently pursuing their degree will also be considered, provided they demonstrate relevant experience. A minimum of five years' experience in a similar role within manufacturing environments that produce complex milled and turned components is essential, particularly for sectors such as orthopaedics or aerospace. Proven experience in managing engineering projects, familiarity with project tracking tools, and a solid understanding of process adherence in highly regulated industries are required. Technical proficiency in CAM systems like Hypermill, Mastercam, or Vericut, along with CNC programming skills—preferably with multi-axis machining experience—are highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should have a basic understanding of lean manufacturing principles and industrial engineering concepts, including process flow and equipment layout. Strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and proficiency with ERP systems for documentation and process management are also critical for success in this role.

Responsibilities
As an Applications Engineer, your key responsibilities will include:
- Planning, leading, and executing multiple engineering projects while ensuring timely delivery and reporting progress to management.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams such as Programme Management, Quality, Planning, and Production, as well as engaging with customer technical teams to align project goals and resolve technical issues.
- Owning manufacturing process development, including creating and refining work instructions, and proactively identifying opportunities for process improvements and cost reductions.
- Representing the engineering perspective in daily operations meetings, providing insights and resolutions to support manufacturing efficiency.
- Preparing accurate financial estimations to support quotations and project pro formas, and managing manufacturing costs to meet project targets by identifying and implementing corrective actions when necessary.
- Utilizing extensive technical expertise to drive best practices, implement innovative solutions, and collaborate with stakeholders to enhance product quality and process performance.
