Applications Scientist, Composites – Student Placement

Location: Blackley, UK
Job Type: Full-time, Student Placement (Industrial Placement Year)

How You'll Make an Impact

As an Applications Scientist, Composites - Student Placement, you'll be at the forefront of innovation, helping to develop advanced composite materials by investigating how Lubrizol additives influence processing, performance, and end-use properties. Working alongside scientists, researchers, and commercial teams, you'll contribute to projects that support the development of new technologies and products while gaining valuable industry experience in materials science and polymer technologies.

In this role, you will:

  • Design and execute experimental programmes to evaluate the effect of Lubrizol additives on composite material performance.
  • Perform mechanical, physical, and thermal testing of composite materials using industry-standard techniques.
  • Analyse experimental data to establish relationships between additive chemistry, processing conditions, and material properties.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, process experimental data, and communicate findings through presentations and team meetings.
  • Collaborate daily with polymer synthesis, applied science, and marketing teams to support project objectives and innovation initiatives.
  • Contribute to projects ranging from fundamental research through to market-focused product development, with timescales varying from six months to three years.
  • Support laboratory safety activities and assist with wider projects across the applications group as required.

Required Qualifications that Enable Your Success

  • Currently studying towards a degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline that includes a year in industry.
  • Expected to achieve a 2:1 degree classification or above.
  • Grade B or above in A-Level Chemistry (or equivalent).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.
  • Practical laboratory, materials testing, or experimental research experience gained through university projects, internships, or work placements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise multiple tasks and projects.

Preferred Qualifications that Drive You Forward

  • Strong interest in composite materials, materials characterisation, and applied research.
  • Knowledge of polymer chemistry and structure-property relationships.
  • Experience interpreting experimental results and drawing evidence-based conclusions.
  • Understanding of laboratory health, safety, and good scientific practice.
  • Interest in advancing innovative materials technologies from concept through to commercial application.
