The Applied AI Product Team

The Applied AI Product Team converts Mercer's proprietary expertise, data, and experience into scalable AI products. Every product we ship builds infrastructure and knowledge that makes the next product faster and higher quality.

The Role

The Applied AI Product Manager owns the end-to-end delivery of AI products from discovery through to production operation. This is a builder role for someone deeply technical who can translate business problems into working products, drive discovery of what matters most, and own the platform and tooling that enables the team to move fast.

You'll own complete products. From talking to consultants about what they need, to shipping something they use internally, to turning it into a client product. You'll make decisions about scope, quality, and timing. You'll own the outcomes: adoption, business impact, and measurable value delivered.

This is a builder role. Someone who thinks like a product person and codes like an engineer. Someone who understands what is technically possible, what is valuable to build, and how to move fast in a large enterprise environment.

What You'll Own

  • End-to-end product ownership: Own products from discovery to production. In partnership with the business and engineering orgs, define what to build, why, in what sequence. Make the decisions about scope, quality, and timing that keep products moving. Own the outcomes like adoption, business impact, and measurable value delivered.
  • Building and shipping products: You are not handing work off. You are shipping end-to-end. You understand the full lifecycle from idea to production operation to be used by consultants and clients.
  • Discovery and opportunity identification: Actively find the highest-value problems Mercer can solve with AI. Understand the business deeply enough to spot opportunities before they are asked for. Validate that opportunities are real before committing resources. Identify tools consultants are already building and assess whether they should become products for broader use.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What We Need To Have

  • 5+ years building and shipping products: A track record of shipping production systems, not just prototypes. Engineering, infrastructure, data, or product roles are relevant for this. From discovery to production operation. You have owned the full lifecycle of a product. You understand what it takes to ship, not just to build.
  • Deep technical expertise in building with AI: Hands-on experience integrating, deploying, and operating AI systems in production. You understand what works and what does not because you have shipped it.
  • JavaScript/TypeScript background: You are comfortable with full-stack applications, backend services, and infrastructure code in this ecosystem.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity: Discovering what to build, not just executing what is asked. The ability to talk to users, understand their problems, and decide what to ship first.
  • Excellent communication: Able to explain technical decisions and trade-offs to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.

What Makes You Stand Out

  • Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) building or consuming MCP servers and tools.
  • Exposure to AI safety and guardrails understanding how to build defensible AI products.
  • Product sense. You have opinions about what users actually need. You can spot a bad idea quickly. You push back on scope creep.

What Makes This Role Different

  • You'll have the autonomy to move fast. You make technical and product decisions. You ship and learn.
  • You'll understand the full impact of your work. You own the business impact and will see client and consultant impact with your products.
  • You'll shape how we build. The operating model in AI is emergent. You'll help define what "fast" and "quality" mean for an AI product team. You'll influence how we work.
