Applied Physicist
We’re working with a specialist technology business delivering advanced modelling and analytical solutions across UK Defence and Security. This role is ideal for an Applied Physicist who wants to take technically challenging work beyond theory and see it deployed into real-world, mission-critical environments.
Role Overview
- Location: Bath-Area / Hybrid – 3 days per week on-site
- Package: Up-to £90,000 salary + annual performance bonus
- Industry: Defence & Security / Applied Mathematics / Advanced Modelling
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead technically complex mathematical and modelling workstreams across UK Defence and Security programmes.
- Build sophisticated models covering areas such as operational scenarios, platform performance, logistics and decision-making.
- Turn complex stakeholder requirements into robust analytical approaches and technical specifications.
- Develop algorithms across areas including signal processing, sensor fusion and autonomous systems.
- Lead verification and validation activity to ensure models are accurate, reliable and suitable for mission-critical use.
- Deliver Operational Analysis projects that support evidence-based decisions for Defence stakeholders.
- Work closely with engineers, software developers and analysts to integrate mathematical models into larger simulation and synthetic environments.
- Apply techniques including stochastic modelling, optimisation and game theory to challenging real-world problems.
- Balance model fidelity, computational efficiency and real-time performance when designing solutions.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior analysts, physicists and mathematicians.
- Produce high-quality technical reports, research outputs and supporting documentation.
- Bring technical expertise into bids, proposals and wider commercial activity.
- Manage sensitive data appropriately within secure and classified environments.
- Represent the business in technical forums and working groups alongside Defence and industry partners.

Main Skills Needed
- Degree in Mathematics, Theoretical Physics, Applied Physics or another highly quantitative discipline.
- Strong experience delivering technical work within UK Defence, Aerospace or a closely related environment.
- Advanced mathematical modelling skills, ideally including Monte Carlo simulation, Bayesian inference, numerical methods, optimisation and statistical analysis.
- Strong Python skills, particularly NumPy and SciPy; experience with FORTRAN or Julia would also be valuable.
- Experience taking mathematical models from initial formulation through development, validation and production deployment.
- Good understanding of Operational Analysis and the wider UK Defence Science & Technology landscape.
- Experience working with MoD assessment frameworks and military or government stakeholders.
- Ability to review complex analytical code, mathematical approaches and technical outputs with a high level of rigour.
- Familiarity with simulation platforms or synthetic environments used within Defence experimentation or training.
- Experience operating within secure environments and handling classified or sensitive information.
- Confidence explaining complex mathematical concepts to both technical and non-technical senior stakeholders.
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary technical teams while managing multiple workstreams and competing priorities.
- Excellent attention to detail, particularly when working on safety-critical or mission-critical systems.
