Join James Todd & Co as an Apprentice Accounts Assistant
Build your career in a well-established accountancy practice.
Working with a variety of clients and supporting Accountants in the firm, the successful applicant will also study to achieve a Professional Accounts Technician Level 4 Apprenticeship.
What you will gain:
- Experience working with a varied portfolio of clients
- Working with and supporting qualified Accountants across accounts preparation, tax, and wider practice work as part of your ongoing development
- Hands-on experience with client work from an early stage together with the opportunity to build your technical knowledge and progress over time
Key Responsibilities
- Process client data using cloud software including Xero, Dext, Sage and QuickBooks
- Develop bookkeeping skills to support progression into year-end accounts preparation and tax work using the CCH software suite
- Assist with the preparation of year-end accounts for Limited Companies, LLPs, Sole Traders and Partnerships
- Prepare accounts packs and supporting documentation for client submission under the supervision of the portfolio manager
- Work on file review points and make necessary amendments
- Assist with the preparation and filing of corporation tax and personal tax returns under supervision
- Assist with ad hoc duties throughout the year, including P11D submissions
- Work within agreed client budgets and deadlines
- Ensure compliance with internal procedures, policies and relevant legislation
- Support Accountants and the wider team as required
Who you will be:
- Someone with an interest in developing a career in accounts and tax
- Someone who demonstrates strong attention to detail and organisation
- Someone with good time management and ability to work to deadlines
- Someone confident in their communication skills with a team-focused approach
- Someone who has already achieved their Level 3 Accounts Assistant Apprenticeship to be able to do a Level 4 apprenticeship or
- Someone wanting to do their Level 2 or Level 3 Accounts Assistant Apprenticeship would be considered
Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

- Collate and analyse financial information, and show how that information can be used most effectively to support value creation within an organisation.
- Apply accounting principles and adhere to legislation to ensure records are accurate and compliant with law or company policy when delivering accounting activities, such as the financial accounting of single entities, limited companies or partnerships or management accounting activities for an organisation.
- Apply professional scepticism when undertaking accounting activities to inform and evaluate decision making on the content of true and fair accounts, being alert to conditions that may indicate possible misstatement of financial information due to error or fraud, establishing the facts sensitively and being aware of unconscious bias.
- Interpret financial information for accounting purposes, such as using judgement to determine the correct way to report or account for transaction or undertaking ratio analysis.
- Participate in or support others with quality improvement activities, for example the improvement of personal working practices.
- Use software packages to assist with accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
- Deliver accounting tasks with a critical eye to transactions and trends, demonstrating a ‘right first time approach’.
- Use workload management principles to plan, organise and prioritise own tasks, and manage time effectively.
- Use accounting information to add value to the organisation through use of data visualisations, analysis and interpretation, and communicate financial information in a way that facilitates understanding for non-finance stakeholders.
- Communicate accounting information through a variety of media to enable key stakeholders to understand what is required, considering the risks and benefits to the organisation of social media and other digital applications.
- Build and maintain collaborative, professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders to deliver accounting tasks, recognising the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade 4)
- Math (grade 4)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
Other requirements
What you need to know:
- This is an 18-month apprenticeship plus 4 months end point assessment
- This role is primarily based at the Chichester office with some attendance at Chichester College and occasional requirement to work from the Fareham office
- Own transport is essential due to the rural location of the Chichester office (which has limited public transport) and the necessity to travel on occasion
- Applicants MUST BE resident in the UK for a minimum of 3 years prior to the start of learning and have work authorisation for the UK
- Applicants WILL NOT BE eligible to apply if they have already achieved a qualification which is equal to or higher thank the apprenticeship standard on offer
- Applicants MUST BE resident in the area local to the apprenticeship opportunity or be prepared to relocate in time to start employment and study
- Applicants MUST BE committed to the learning and stay to the end of the apprenticeship
- Please note that 5 GCSEs are required for the Level 4 Apprenticeship including Math and English and a minimum grade of 4
- Level 2 or 3 apprenticeship applicants will be considered
- Level 3 Accounts Assistant will require a Level 2 Finance/Accounts Assistant already achieved
