Join Battle Brewery as an Apprentice Brewer!
Based in a beautiful rural setting, this hands-on Level 4 role covers the full brewing process, from mashing and fermentation to packaging and hygiene, with a supportive team.
What you'll do at work
- Move sacks of grain, shift casks, and handle heavy brewing equipment
- Execute thorough cleaning, sanitizing, and hygiene routines across all facility equipment and work areas
- Assist with fermentation monitoring, yeast management, and cellar operations
- Carry out repetitive packaging runs across multiple formats (casking, kegging, or bottling)
- Perform regular stock control, ingredient prep, and basic record-keeping
- Work alongside the brewing team to ensure day-to-day operations run safely and smoothly

- Apply planning, prioritising and time management techniques
- Select and use brewing ingredients according to beer recipes.
- Adjust recipes to limit batch to batch variance.
- Maintain records for existing beer recipes.
- Control and operate automated or manual plant and equipment required for brewing.
- Clean down plant and equipment on completion of the brewhouse stage of brewing.
- Control and operate automated or manual plant and equipment required for fermentation and conditioning.
- Monitor and maintain yeast hygiene, vitality, and viability.
- Clean down plant and equipment on completion of the yeast and fermentation stage of brewing.
- Control and operate automated or manual plant and equipment required for beer finishing and maturation (stabilisation).

- Promote the beer industry and the brewery they are employed at.

This role requires comfortable handling of heavy physical tasks, continuous manual labour (including lifting grain sacks and moving casks), and prolonged cleaning and sanitizing duties within a brewery setting.
Battle Brewery is a forward-thinking craft and traditional real ale brewery based in the historic town of Battle. Its beers are expertly brewed using original recipes that celebrate the area’s rich heritage while embracing modern brewing techniques. The range includes characterful ales inspired by local lore alongside crisp, contemporary craft brews. The Brewery itself is located just outside of the main town of Battle in a picturesque woodland setting. Battle Brewery also has a Tap Room and Bottle shop located in the High Street of Battle that caters to a strong local following as well as those visiting Battle and the historic sites of the area such as the famed Battle Abbey.

Upon successful completion of the Level 4 Brewer apprenticeship, the candidate can progress into a full-time, permanent role as a qualified Brewer or Technical Brewer.
With experience in a commercial craft brewery setting, future progression routes include:
- Senior Brewer / Lead Brewer: Taking overall responsibility for recipe execution, daily brewhouse management, and quality control.
- Head Brewer / Brewery Operations Manager: Managing full-scale production schedules, supply chain, team supervision, and site operations.
- Specialist Roles: Opportunities to specialise in areas like cellar management, quality assurance, lab testing, continuous improvement, or brand development and recipe creation.
