Job Description
We’re looking for motivated, caring and truly compassionate individuals to join us as Apprentice Clinical Support Workers across our clinical areas at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
This 15-month apprenticeship is a fantastic first step into a rewarding healthcare career, giving you the chance to learn, grow and make a real difference to patients and their families. As an Apprentice Clinical Support Worker, you’ll play an important role in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to people during some of the most challenging times of their lives.
This is a hands-on, patient-facing role. You’ll spend much of your time working directly with patients while learning the skills needed for a successful career in healthcare. You’ll be part of a supportive team, developing practical clinical skills whilst working towards a nationally recognised qualification.
While we encourage full-time applications, we will also consider part-time working with a minimum commitment of 30 hours per week. As part of the role, you’ll work a variety of shifts including days, nights, weekends and bank holidays, alongside regular study days, helping you balance learning with practical experience.
Eligibility
- Minimum age – 18 for clinical roles.
- Funding cannot be used for training or knowledge, skills and behaviours the apprentice has already achieved.
- Apprentices cannot be enrolled on another apprenticeship or training programme that is funded through government funds; this includes student finance.
- Government funding rules state that individuals must have eligible residency status for a minimum of 3 years and the right to work in the UK. We do not sponsor visas for this apprenticeship post.
- Learners must be able to complete the apprenticeship within the allocated programme length (e.g. visa length must cover the full duration). The programme length will be reflected in their Fixed Term Contract.
Why You Should Join Our Team
Leeds Teaching Hospitals is committed to being the best place to work, and that starts with how we support, value and develop our people.
On successful completion of the apprenticeship, you’ll be granted a permanent Clinical Support Worker role, as well as achieving a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Clinical Healthcare Support.
We have a strong focus on wellbeing, inclusion and work-life balance. We value diversity and are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels respected, valued and able to thrive. Reasonable adjustments are available for disabled applicants.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You Will Bring To The Role
Above all, we are looking for people who genuinely want to care for others.
This is a caring role at its heart, and compassion, kindness and respect are just as important as the clinical skills you’ll develop throughout the apprenticeship. You’ll bring compassion, empathy and a genuine desire to support patients, along with the motivation to learn and grow throughout the apprenticeship. You don’t need previous experience, just a willingness to learn, a positive attitude and the confidence to ask questions as you grow. Being reliable, patient and respectful will help you settle into the team, and your natural ability to communicate with others will make a real difference to the patients you meet. Most importantly, you’ll bring curiosity, compassion and the motivation to develop new skills at a pace that feels manageable and supported.
What Your Role Entails
As an Apprentice Clinical Support Worker at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, you'll learn how to provide patients with essential care and support.
Working directly with patients every day, you'll support them with activities of daily living, including assisting them with washing, dressing and personal care; supporting patients with eating and drinking; helping patients move safely and comfortably; supporting patients with toileting needs; promoting comfort, dignity and independence wherever possible; and providing reassurance, emotional support and compassionate care.
Throughout the 15-month programme, you'll spend most of your time working within a dedicated ward or clinical area, allowing you to become part of the team.
Working alongside nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, you’ll gain experience in monitoring and observing patients, including measuring things such as blood pressure and changes to weight and temperature.
Alongside your practical experience, you'll attend study days, complete coursework and undertake practical assessments to demonstrate your learning and development. You'll receive support throughout as you build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to deliver outstanding patient care and begin a rewarding career within the NHS.
