Apprentice CNC Machinist

IMS PRECISION ENGINEERING LTD. Huntingdon (PE28 3LH)

Summary

You will be learning all aspects of working in a subcontract machining workshop, from sawing up and preparing raw materials for machining operations, to manual machining and on to operating, setting and programming a range of CNC machines. Young people (16-18) will be assigned a mentor.

Wage: £16,640 to £26,436.80, depending on your age
National Minimum Wage: Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)
Pay will be reviewed as progress is made through the training matrix.

Training

Course: Engineering operative (level 2)
Hours: 07:30 to 16:00, Monday to Friday. 40 hours a week
Start date: Sunday 1 November 2026
Duration: 1 year
Positions available: 1

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to Health & Safety rules in the workplace
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures in the workplace
  • Undergo training on a range of machinery
  • Operate machines that are already set for machining operations
  • Assist in selecting and setting cutting tools
  • Assist in loading and setting work holding
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and solid models
  • Measure and monitor finished parts to ensure parts are within tolerance
  • Learn to read, prove and edit CNC programs
  • Perform daily maintenance checks on machinery
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work area
