Bridgwater-Based Apprentice in Advanced Mould-Making and RTM Manufacturing
Canute is seeking a Bridgwater-based apprentice to learn advanced mould-making and RTM manufacturing techniques. This hands-on role offers the chance to gain practical skills on live projects, earn a recognised qualification, and build a long-term career, with the potential for a permanent position on completion.
What You'll Do at Work
Join our expert team and develop highly sought-after skills in advanced manufacturing and composites technology, including:
- Advanced composite mould-making techniques, working on real-life projects from day one
- Professional spray-painting methods used in high-quality production environments
- CNC machine operation and precision manufacturing techniques
- Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) production processes used to create advanced composite products
- Working hands-on with specialist materials, tools and equipment
- Learning how to operate safely and professionally within a manufacturing environment
- Contributing to exciting live projects alongside experienced colleagues
- Maintaining high standards of quality, organisation and attention to detail
- Applying the knowledge gained at college directly to real workplace tasks
- Building valuable practical skills that will set you up for a successful long-term career in engineering and manufacturing

Training Details
Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

What You'll Learn
Course Contents
- Review drawings, instructions, or information to understand task.
- Plan work. Identify and organise resources.
- Identify hazards and risks in the workplace.
- Apply health and safety procedures in compliance with regulations and standards.
- Apply environmental and sustainability procedures in compliance with regulations and standards.
- Apply sustainability principles for example, in choice of materials, minimising waste.
- Prepare and use mould tools.
- Select and check hand tools, equipment and machinery including calibration record.
- Use or operate hand tools, equipment, and machinery.
- Store mould tools, hand tools, and equipment.
- Select, check, and prepare materials for example, weigh resins, cut reinforcement.
- Follow quality control processes during manufacture for example, check for contaminants, record batch numbers or expiry dates.
- Apply laminate to mould for example, cut, add darts, corner definition, orientation, position, and order.
- Complete preparation for and start curing process for example, select and apply consumables for example vacuum bag, infuse with resin, add heat or pressure.
- Extract product from mould (break out).
- Conduct final product quality assurance procedure. For example, conduct grading parameters checks (size, appearance, weight), and take samples for laboratory testing.
- Identify issues for example, de-laminations, inclusions, surface defects, surface imperfections, and maintenance requirements.
- Escalate issues outside limits of responsibility.
- Segregate resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
- Record or enter data - paper based or electronic. For example, process and production records, traceability records, and quality assurance records.
- Interpret data for example, defect data and geometrical measurements. Use data to validate suggestions.
- Investigate a problem to identify the underlying cause. Identify a solution to the problem.
- Apply continuous improvement techniques. Devise suggestions for improvement. For example, improving the energy consumption or waste profile of processes and procedures to improve the sustainability or carbon footprint of a product, process, or task.
- Apply team working principles.
- Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
- Communicate in written form in the workplace for example, handover notes or emails, non-conformances, design change requests.
- Use information technology for work tasks. Comply with GDPR and cyber security regulations and policies.
- Plan how to meet personal development needs. Carry out and record planned and unplanned continued professional development (CPD) activities. Evaluate CPD against plans made.

Training Schedule
The apprenticeship training is delivered through a combination of workplace learning and regular college attendance. This training will teach you the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the Level 3 Composites Technician. On completion the apprentice will receive the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, BTEC L3 Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technologies and the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Composite Engineering. Functional Skills in maths and English may also be required depending on current level.

Other Requirements
- Able to travel to work and college reliably and turn up on time, candidates within easy daily reach of our Bridgwater unit (right next to train station) are well placed for the day-release pattern
- If you are happy taking on physical, active work of this kind, this could be a great fit
- You MUST be prepared to commit to your work and training for the duration of the apprenticeship. In some cases, you may be required to have a telephone interview with Yeovil College prior to your application being passed on. If a suitable candidate is found prior to the advertised closing date, it may close earlier so please apply early to avoid disappointment
About Canute Homes
Canute Homes was founded in 2024 with the goal of finding solutions to the global housing crisis. For building contractors, there is a logistical minefield of labour allocation and material purchase for every housing project. Often times the period of building a house extends over months, which is long enough to see increase in prices of some of the materials.
Once we identified fibreglass, it became increasingly clear that it is not only one of the strongest materials known to man, but it is also lighter. The next challenge was design. Our design focuses on hermetic sealing, ease of installation, durability, seismic resistance, sound proofing, thermal insulation, etc. Paul and Dee founded the company to begin pre-production of these modular housing panels in 2024. In early 2027, the first deliveries on preorders will begin. So this is our story.
