Summary
We are an innovative and market-leading software & services company based in Chorley serving clients in the utility sector ranging from new entrants to large existing suppliers. We deliver sophisticated software solutions and managed services in a Hybrid Cloud infrastructure, servicing both traditional and modern real-time, smart energy clients.
We operate a Hybrid working policy so you will be able to flex between working in the office and your home location to carry out this role, however during your initial training period the need to be in the office with other team members will be essential. Our UK office is based in Chorley, which is where you will be based.

The Apprentice Data Engineer will join the Database Administrators team and work closely with the Lead Database Administrator to support ESG's data platforms, database environments and business-critical applications. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop practical experience across data engineering and database administration while undertaking a structured apprenticeship programme.
The successful candidate will support the development and maintenance of data pipelines, assist with database monitoring and administration activities, contribute to data quality initiatives and gain exposure to modern cloud and software technologies. This role is ideal for someone passionate about technology, data and continuous learning who is looking to build a long-term career in software engineering and data management.

Position Responsibilities
- Assist with the development, maintenance and monitoring of data pipelines and data integration processes.
- Support the extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) of data across systems and applications.
- Assist with maintaining and improving data quality, integrity and consistency.
- Support the monitoring and administration of MSSQL database and MySQL environments on premise and in cloud (AWS).
- Assist with database backups, restores, maintenance plans and routine health checks.
- Help investigate database performance issues and support optimisation activities.
- Support the management of database security, permissions and access controls.
- Monitor automated jobs, scheduled processes and data workflows, escalating issues where appropriate.
- Assist in troubleshooting data-related incidents and support the implementation of corrective actions.
- Create and maintain technical documentation relating to databases, data processes and system configurations.
- Work collaboratively with developers, engineers and business stakeholders to understand data requirements.
- Participate in testing activities to ensure data accuracy and system reliability.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across data engineering and database administration functions.
- Complete apprenticeship coursework, training and development objectives within agreed timeframes.
- Develop knowledge of cloud technologies, software development practices and data management principles.

- GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent) in line with apprenticeship requirements.

Desirable
- Basic knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
- Exposure to programming or scripting languages through study, personal projects or work experience.
- Understanding data analysis, reporting or business intelligence concepts.
- Familiarity with MSSQL Server / MySQL and cloud platforms such as AWS / Azure.
- Experience using Excel or other tools for data manipulation and analysis.
- Awareness of information security and data protection principles.
