About the Role
The apprenticeship in dental nursing is a 12-month government-funded course by City & Guilds, a Level 3 Extended Diploma. Alongside your learning, your job role within the practice will entail assisting dentists, sterilising & preparing equipment, reception duties and supporting patient experience.
Wage
- £12,480 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age (National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices)

What You'll Do at Work
- Provide efficient and reliable chair-side support to the dental surgery.
- The day-to-day duties of a dental nurse can span across all areas of the practice and can include:
- Reception, including answering the phone and greeting patients
- Dealing with patient queries
- Taking payments
- Booking appointments and follow-ups
- Sterilising and preparing equipment for dentists
- Recording and dealing with patient records
- Supporting patients' wellbeing and dental experience
- Cleaning dental areas, including chairs
- Managing stock of equipment and supplies
- Any other duties to support the dentists and senior team to provide effective patient care

What You'll Learn
- Course contents include identifying relevant anatomy, evaluating health risks of drug use, understanding biomaterials, identifying signs of abuse, assessing patient anxiety, contributing to investigations, undertaking orthodontic assessment, obtaining consent, recording patient history and charting, preparing records and managing radiographs, managing patient anxiety, providing preventive advice, supporting acute oral conditions, adopting evidence-based practice, communicating effectively with patients and colleagues, maintaining patient records, demonstrating respect and empathy, effective team working, managing and delegating work, taking a patient-centred approach, raising concerns, complying with systems for safe patient care, acting in accordance with guidelines and legal frameworks, demonstrating personal accountability, working in partnership, supporting patients in accessing oral healthcare, treating patients with dignity and respect, advocating for patient needs, speaking up to protect others, evaluating health promotion, evaluating environmental impacts of treatment, contributing positively to healthcare communities, evaluating evidence base, utilising feedback for professional development, demonstrating personal development planning, evaluating new techniques and technologies, assessing capabilities and limitations, recognising personal assumptions and biases, managing contextual factors, demonstrating professional responsibility and competence, maintaining wellbeing, continuous improvement activities, and managing time and resources. Training Schedule
- Dental Nurse (GDC 2023) Level 3 (A level) Apprenticeship Standard. The training will take place at the dental surgery. Functional Skills if required. Off-the-job training is on average 7 hours per week.
Desirable Qualifications
- GCSE in English (grade 4) and Maths (grade 4). Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
