Job Title: Apprentice Electrical Fitter

Business Unit: Substations

Purpose of the Position:

Our Apprentice Electrical Maintenance program has been designed so that the successful applicant will complete a modern apprenticeship. The apprentice programme is a 3-year apprenticeship. You will work alongside time served electrical fitters learning key skills developing electrical fitting skills for working.

As an apprentice electrical fitter, you will attend college to complete the required SVQ in qualification. This is block release, usually in 2-week blocks.

Due to the nature of where the college is located and where our various sites are located you will ideally have your own transport or use of reliable public transport for commuting when term starts.

Responsibilities & Duties:

While at college:

  • Attend college on the days and times associated with the qualification and agreed by tutors and managers
  • Complete the required work associated with SVQ assessments and portfolios in a timely manner. (If there are any difficulties meeting required deadlines this should be raised with your tutors and manager).

Typical duties while at work include, but are not limited to:

  • Working in Live Substations up to 400kV
  • Read and understand electrical drawings associated with Protection Panel Installation wiring and circuit diagrams.
  • Read and understand Cable Schedules and installation of multicore cables.
  • Read and understand Primary Layouts installation of circuit breakers, disconnectors, earth switches and earth grid layouts.
  • Be prepared to work at height and in outside conditions.

Interfaces and relationships with key stakeholders:

  • Electrical fitters
  • Site supervisor
  • Site Manager
  • Tutors at college

Person Specification

Qualifications and experience

  • A minimum of 5 A-C GCSEs grade C which includes English, Math, and Science and two other subjects.
  • Strong IT skills when using a variety of Microsoft packages.
  • A desire to want a long-term career as an Electrical Fitter with good progression to Site Manager or project management.
  • Good communication skills to ultimately liaise with colleagues and tutors.
  • An interest/understanding of technologies and engineering.
