Summary
Capricorn Controls Ltd is seeking an Electronic Engineering Apprentice to gain hands-on experience in electronics manufacturing, testing and assembly while working towards a recognised qualification.
Wage £18,000 a year
Training course Engineering fitter (level 3)
Hours Monday - Thursday 8:00am - 4:45pm, Friday 8:00am - 1:30pm
Start date Monday 2 November 2026

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
As an Apprentice Electronics Technician, you will gain hands-on experience across a range of manufacturing, assembly, and electronics activities, developing your skills as you progress through the programme.
Initial Training and Development:
- PCB (Printed Circuit Board) assembly, including fitting components and soldering
- Wiring loom assembly, including wire cutting, crimping, and fitting conduit
- Assisting with a variety of mechanical and electronic assembly tasks
- Learning safe working practices and quality standards within the workplace
Once Competent:
- Finishing and testing a range of electronic assemblies
- Carrying out quality checks to ensure products meet specification
- Diagnosing and resolving basic assembly and testing issues
As Your Experience Grows:
- Assisting with and developing electronic circuit designs
- Learning to write and modify software for microprocessors that control electronic circuits
- Supporting the development and testing of new electronic products and systems
- Working alongside experienced engineers to build your technical knowledge and expertise

- Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
- Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
- Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
- Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
- Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
- Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
- Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
- Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
- Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
- Reporting work outcomes or issues.
- Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
- Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
- Operating within limits of responsibility.
- Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.
Training schedule
Qualifications included:
- Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship Standard.
- Company Training Plan & Assessment
- Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Development Knowledge (1 day per week for 2 years at college)
- Development Competence Qualification (workplace)
- Level 2 Functional Skills - maths (If required)
- Level 2 Functional Skills - English (If required)
- End Point Assessment at the end of the apprenticeship

Requirements
Essential qualifications
- GCSE in: A Min of 5 GCSE's inc Science, English & Maths (grade 5-9 / C-A*)

As the apprentice progresses within the role, there will be opportunities to continue their professional development by undertaking a Higher National Certificate (HNC) and potentially further higher-level qualifications
Over time, this will enable the apprentice to develop the advanced technical knowledge and skills required to design, develop, and bring new electronic products into production.
With experience, the apprentice could progress into roles involving product design, product development, testing, and engineering project support, building towards a rewarding long-term career within the business
