CAD Technician Apprentice

Pure Group is growing and looking for a motivated CAD Technician Apprentice to join our friendly, experienced team. Gain hands-on experience creating technical drawings for real projects, learn from skilled engineers, and complete a recognised apprenticeship while building a long-term career in design and engineering.

What you'll do at work

What you’ll be doing:

As a CAD Technician Apprentice, you’ll support the business by creating and maintaining accurate technical drawings and assisting with IT and systems support. With guidance and training, you’ll develop valuable technical, IT, and problem-solving skills, including:

  • Learning to use AutoCAD to create, update, and maintain drawings
  • Assisting with installation drawings for live projects
  • Producing as-built (record) drawings
  • Updating drawings for maintenance and servicing
  • Managing drawing libraries and specifications
  • Following CAD standards for accuracy and consistency
  • Supporting CAFM and internal systems
  • Assisting with IT equipment setup and general support
  • Working closely with engineers and the Managing Director
  • Completing apprenticeship training and applying learning on the job

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Apply health and safety procedures and safe systems of work in compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Work in accordance with the design process, company management systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Review and interpret technical information and requirements from different sources such as specifications, engineering drawings, concepts, stakeholders.
  • Identify and assess factors that affect designs such as materials, application, location, risk, and environment.
  • Select materials and parts.
  • Propose and evaluate ideas for sustainable engineering concepts to solve engineering challenges.
  • Develop solutions that can be manufactured or built, and proven, operated, and maintained during their operational life and decommissioned or recycled at the end of their operational life.
  • Provide feedback on engineering designs.
  • Apply quality assurance procedures to engineering drawings or models, including own designs and those of peers.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Produce written documents, schedules, and reports.
  • Identify, organise, and use resources to complete tasks with consideration for cost, quality, safety, security, and environmental impact.
  • Identify inaccuracies or discrepancies in drawings and specifications and propose solutions.
  • Incorporate changes to an existing design as a result of any modifications made during the as-built implementation.
  • Create concepts for system layouts and associated components.
  • Read, interpret, and establish design intent.
  • Determine the correct tolerances for components of the design.
  • Follow equality, diversity, and inclusion procedures.
  • Perform simple calculations to use in design drawings.
  • Use measuring techniques for reverse engineering.

  • Produce detailed drawings of piping components such as pipework, ducts, and fittings, including supports and skids.
  • Use digital tools such as CAD or Plant Design Management Systems to produce piping design project deliverables.

Option 5. Produce general arrangements of structures showing multiple materials such as steel, concrete, masonry, timber.

  • Produce detailed drawings for multiple materials such as steel, concrete, timber, or masonry.

Training schedule

The successful candidate will complete the Engineering Manufacturing and Support Technician apprenticeship delivered by MK College. Training will combine off-the-job learning with practical, on-the-job experience. You will receive structured training in:

  • Using AutoCAD and understanding CAD standards
  • Technical drawing principles and documentation
  • Engineering support processes
  • IT systems and CAFM systems
  • Health & safety and workplace best practice

Apprenticeship training will support both technical development and professional skills

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Maths (grade 9-5)
  • English (grade 9-4)
  • Science (grade 9-4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

This role is primarily office-based, with occasional site visits to support drawing updates and information gathering, therefore a driving licence is preferred. You’ll work both independently and closely alongside engineers and the wider team, and must be comfortable using computers and learning new systems and software as part of the role. Predicted grades will be accepted. However, any offers made will be conditional, pending actual grades.
