Job Description: Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship

Overview

To support the delivery of the Engineering strategy across the site by helping maintain plant machinery, services, and equipment safely and efficiently. Develop practical engineering skills through planned and corrective maintenance activities, supported by the Engineering Manager, Engineering Team, and recognised apprenticeship framework.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance Activities:

    • Carry out and record planned and corrective maintenance on plant machinery and services as scheduled by the Engineering Department.
    • Identify maintenance opportunities and support cost-effective improvements to plant efficiency and equipment reliability.
    • Ensure machinery and services are in working order and ready for production following maintenance periods.
    • Provide support to Shift Engineers, Operations teams, and the Engineering Manager as required.
  • Health and Safety:

    • Support the implementation of health and safety policies, procedures, safe systems of work, and legal compliance requirements.
    • Work with the safety lead to control health and safety risks within designated work areas.
    • Maintain a safe and efficient working environment and support equipment start-up compliance.
  • Continuous Improvement:

    • Identify improvement opportunities and support the continuous improvement process for existing engineering and manufacturing processes.
    • Support lean manufacturing, engineering improvement, and best practice activities across the site.
    • Ensure Production is informed when work has been completed on machinery or services.
  • Communication and Coordination:

    • Communicate effectively with internal teams and support coordination for plant shutdowns and maintenance activities.
  • Personal Attributes:

    • Demonstrate integrity, reliability, calmness under pressure, and a positive approach to teamwork and learning.

Mechatronics maintenance technician (level 3)

Course Contents

  • Use information technology for documentation, communication, and information management.
  • Obtain, read, and interpret task-related documentation.
  • Record information such as job sheets, risk assessments, and equipment service records.
  • Conduct initial assessment of equipment that requires maintenance.
  • Formulate plans for maintenance activities.
  • Select, prepare, and use material, consumables, tools, and equipment.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations and organizational requirements.
  • Apply dynamic risk assessment, hazard identification, and risk mitigation principles.
  • Apply isolation principles and techniques to equipment undergoing maintenance.
  • Manufacture, repair, and refurbish components using hand and machine tools.
  • Restore the workplace on completion of the maintenance activity.
  • Apply techniques and processes in reactive maintenance and repair activities.
  • Produce, maintain, update, record, and store documentation.
  • Apply techniques and processes in planned and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Apply functional testing and checking techniques after maintenance interventions.
  • Apply techniques and processes in condition monitoring and non-destructive testing.
  • Apply calculation techniques such as feeds, speeds, tolerances, electrical calculations, power calculations, and cable sizing calculations.
  • Select, use, and confirm calibration of electrical and mechanical testing and measuring equipment.
  • Produce sketches or drawings to support maintenance activities.
  • Communicate in writing and verbally.
  • Segregate, separate, and dispose of waste streams and by-products.
  • Apply 4S or 5S principles of housekeeping.
  • Identify opportunities and make recommendations to improve operational performance.
  • Apply continuous improvement techniques.
  • Follow equity, diversity, and inclusion procedures.
  • Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities.
  • Apply fault finding techniques used in reactive maintenance.

Training Schedule

  • Year 1: 3 days a week at Yeovil College (term time only)
  • Years 2 & 3: 1 day a week at Yeovil College (term time only)

Essential Qualifications

  • GCSE in English (grade 9 – 4 / A* - C)
  • GCSE in Maths (grade 9 – 4 / A* - C)

Other Requirements

Due to the upcoming intake, the apprentice must currently be living in and around Shepton Mallet.

Continued professional development may also lead to higher-level engineering qualifications and management roles within manufacturing, engineering, or maintenance environments.
