An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Apprentice Engineer at NEFS Ltd, based in the Durham/Darlington area. There is an excellent opportunity to progress and grow within the company for the right candidate who is enthusiastic and keen to learn new skills.

Monday to Friday, (40 hours per week, to be worked between the hours of 8.00am and 6.00pm) 30 mins lunch break.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Duties to include:

  • Assisting with first and second fix of fire and security systems
  • Maintenance and repair of existing fire and security systems previously installed
  • Use of hand tools and cordless drill
  • Liaising with customers on site/site personnel
  • Commissioning, testing, fault finding
  • Updating site paperwork - work sheets and handover documentation
  • Following guidance on Health & Safety and site-specific policies

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Comply with safety legislation, codes of practice, risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and apply control measures.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
  • Apply and implement system design, planning and installations including additional components to existing systems.
  • Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose and repair faults.
  • Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations and standards.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
  • Carries out risk assessments.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector specific terminology.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector specific terminology through written means.
  • Plan and install systems cabling.
  • Carry out maintenance activities on fire detection and alarm systems and their components.
  • Carry out maintenance activities on intrusion alarm, access control, video surveillance (CCTV) and their components.

Training schedule

You will attend Access Training (Team Valley, Gateshead) for day release - and be enrolled on the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems level 3 apprenticeship standard.

Day release may be 1-day per week or 1-day per fortnight dependent upon the phase of the course you are on.

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE in:
    • English (grade 4)
    • Maths (grade 4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

  • Candidate must be based in the Durham/ Darlington area.
  • It is expected that candidates have either passed their driving test or are starting to learn.
  • Please note this role may involve working at height or occasionally in small spaces.
  • Due to the nature of the work, some flexibility with working hours may be required from time to time.
  • Generally - no working away from home but odd occasions arise where we may have a job away.

As well as being experienced 18th edition time served electricians, we are also BAFE accredited and certified in design, install, maintenance and commissioning of all fire alarm systems and hold SSAIB accreditation in Intruder, access control and CCTV design and installation.
