About the Role

This 3-year programme provides the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours for service technicians by working on a range of lift trucks and powered access machines. Suitable for anyone interested in engineering, where during the first two years focus is on removal, refit, service, and inspection and then a third year on fault diagnosis.

Wage

  • £16,640 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age
  • National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices
  • Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)
  • The pay may be negotiated and may rise after a probation period has been successfully completed.

Hours

  • Monday - Friday, 8.00am - 4.30pm (breaks to be confirmed)
  • 40 hours a week

What you'll do at work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work:

  • Acquire the skills to be able to service, maintain and repair forklift trucks and other material handling equipment
  • Working in a branch or at one of our customer's sites working within a variety of environments and varying types of materials handling equipment
  • Adhering to safety guidelines set and all policies set out by customers and Windsor Materials Handling

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Apply health and safety procedures and safe systems of work in compliance with regulations and standards relevant to lift truck or powered access machines.
  • Obtain and interpret lift truck and powered access machine technical data and repair instructions.
  • Use tools, workshop equipment, diagnostic and measuring equipment when carrying out maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform preventative maintenance activities on lift truck and powered access machines.
  • Perform inspections on lift truck and powered access machines in compliance with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) regulations.
  • Remove and replace mechanical, electrical and hydraulic components.
  • Apply diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to diagnose faults on lift truck or powered access machine systems.
  • Carry out functional testing and quality checks on repaired lift truck or powered access machine components and systems.
  • Carry out repairs and make required adjustments.
  • Record or enter information - paper based or electronic. For example, job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturers' documentation, work sheets, checklists.
  • Check and maintain stock.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Prepare and maintain a clean, tidy and safe working area.
  • Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks, in compliance with quality, safety, sustainability and environmental standards and guidance.
  • Follow equality, diversity and inclusion procedures.
  • Store and maintain tools, workshop equipment, diagnostic and measuring equipment for maintenance and repairs.

Training schedule

  • An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation
  • At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying

More training information

  • The programme is delivered over 3 years, through 5 x 1-week training blocks per year
  • Throughout the programme apprentices will be required to build up a portfolio of work for the End Point Assessment
  • Apprentices will achieve a Level 3 Lift Truck and Powered Access Engineering Technician Apprenticeship
  • Full training schedule has yet to be agreed upon, further details will be made available at a later date

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE in:

Other requirements

  • The role will involve work within the branch workshop and onsite at our customers premises where conditions vary from indoor, cold store and outdoor.
