Apprentice Fire & Security Installation Engineer
Pyrocel Ltd are seeking a motivated and committed Apprentice Fire & Security Installation Engineer to join their team, based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The successful candidate will receive training in the installation and testing of fire alarm, CCTV, intruder alarm, and access control systems under the supervision of experienced engineers.
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
The role will involve working on projects throughout the North East of England, assisting with installations and developing an understanding of relevant British Standards and approved installation methods while undertaking appropriate training and qualifications.
- A willingness to learn, a professional attitude, and a strong commitment to developing practical skills are essential.
- Main duties include:
- Assist experienced engineers with the installation of fire alarms, CCTV, intruder alarms, and access control systems.
- Support the testing, commissioning, and maintenance of fire and security systems to ensure they operate effectively.
- Install cables and system equipment and connect to control panels and networks.
- Working to system specifications, plans, schematics, and drawings.
- Safe use of hand tools and following site rules.
- To maintain a safe, tidy, clean, and secure working environment and adhere to Pyrocel Ltd Health and Safety Policy.
Probationary period applies.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Comply with safety legislation, codes of practice, risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work, and apply control measures.
- Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
- Apply and implement system design, planning, and installations including additional components to existing systems.
- Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose, and repair faults.
- Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit, or receive digital data and electronic information.
- Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations, and standards.
- Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
- Carries out risk assessments.
- Communicate with others verbally, for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector-specific terminology.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector-specific terminology through written means.
- Plan and install systems cabling.
- Carry out maintenance activities on fire detection and alarm systems and their components.
- Carry out maintenance activities on intrusion alarm, access control, video surveillance (CCTV), and their components.
Training schedule
Fire, Emergency, and Security Systems Level 3 apprenticeship standard – will attend a combination of weekly/fortnightly day release at our Team Valley training centre.

Essential qualifications
- GCSE in:
- English (grade 4)
- Maths (grade 4)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
- A full driving licence and access to one's own vehicle would be advantageous.
- The role will require the use of hand and power tools, and also working at height, in small spaces, and outdoors.

The role will develop over time in terms of duties and responsibilities. From Year 3 onwards, the apprentice will be responsible for their own jobs, and gradually the team will increase the range of work that they are given whilst receiving ongoing training to enhance their skills.
