21 and Over Year 1: National Minimum Wage £10.85 per hour
Year 2: National Living Wage £12.71 per hour
Hours: 37 hours per week
Contract type: Fixed Term Contract for 3 years

The Role:
Looking for a career that's hands-on, rewarding and makes a real difference to your community? Stoke-on-Trent City Council is recruiting Highway Maintenance Apprentices to join our frontline highways team.
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification while earning a salary and developing practical skills for a long-term career. Working alongside experienced highway operatives, you'll help maintain the city’s roads, footways and drainage systems, keeping Stoke-on-Trent moving safely.

What you’ll do:
- Repair potholes and road defects
- Assist with gully emptying and drainage maintenance
- Learn to use specialist tools and equipment
- Help set up safe work sites
- Support a variety of highway maintenance activities
What we're looking for:
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn
- Someone who enjoys practical, hands-on work
- A reliable team player
- Someone who enjoys working outdoors in all weather conditions

Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in carrying out highway maintenance activities including pothole repairs, footway repairs, drainage maintenance and gully emptying
- Work safely as part of a highways operational team, complying with all health, safety and environmental procedures
- Learn and apply the practical skills and knowledge required to achieve the Level 2 Highway Maintenance qualification
- Operate and maintain tools, plant and equipment under supervision, ensuring they are used safely and effectively
- Support the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance programmes to help maintain a safe and serviceable highway network
- Develop the skills, behaviours and experience required to become a competent highway maintenance operative, contributing to the future resilience and succession planning of the workforce
