Job Purpose
The Apprentice Maintenance Assistant will support the maintenance team in maintaining Lucy Properties’ residential portfolio to a high standard, ensuring properties remain safe, compliant, functional, and well presented for tenants. Working towards a Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship, the apprentice will develop practical skills across a range of property maintenance disciplines including fault finding, repairs, preventative maintenance, painting and decorating, basic plumbing, carpentry, and general building maintenance.
Job Context
The Apprentice Maintenance Assistant is an entry-level role designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to become a competent Property Maintenance Operative. Working alongside experienced members of the Maintenance Team, the apprentice will gain hands-on experience in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of Lucy Properties residential rental portfolio.
The role supports both planned preventative maintenance and responsive repair activities, helping to ensure properties are maintained in a safe, compliant, and cost-effective manner. The apprentice will learn how building systems operate, including basic electrical, plumbing, and safety systems, and will develop the ability to diagnose faults, carry out minor repairs, and contribute to maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.
The role combines workplace learning with formal college attendance and off-the-job training requirements as part of the Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship programme.

Job Dimensions
Lucy Group Ltd is a private company with interests in property and manufacturing. The property division has been in existence for over 50 years and is one of the largest private landlords in Oxford, providing homes for over 700 tenants in over 300 properties. The business owns, lets, and manages its own housing stock.
This role will predominantly be based at our head office in Oxford and reports to the Maintenance Manager.
Key Accountabilities
- Assist with the delivery of property maintenance activities across the Lucy Properties portfolio
- Support planned preventative maintenance programmes and reactive repair works
- Carry out routine inspections of buildings, fixtures, and equipment, reporting defects and maintenance requirements
- Assist in fault finding and diagnosing maintenance issues under supervision
- Undertake minor repairs and refurbishment works including:
- Basic plumbing and drainage repairs
- Painting and decorating
- Minor carpentry & Joinery repairs
- Basic plastering, tiling, and flooring repairs
- General building fabric maintenance
- Use tools, equipment, and materials safely and in accordance with training and company procedures
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities using digital systems and job management software
- Support external contractors and work colleagues during maintenance projects and property improvements
- Ensure work areas are left clean, safe, and tidy and that waste materials are disposed of appropriately
- Follow all company policies, health and safety procedures, and statutory requirements
- Attend college training, complete apprenticeship coursework, and maintain evidence required
- Deliver a professional and customer-focused service when interacting with tenants, contractors, and colleagues
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- A genuine interest in property maintenance, construction, facilities management, or building services
- Willingness to learn practical maintenance skills and complete Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Basic IT skills and willingness to use digital systems
- Ability to follow instructions, procedures, and health and safety requirements
- Positive attitude towards providing excellent customer service
- Reliable, punctual, and motivated attitude
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English
- Basic understanding of tools and maintenance/construction activities
- Previous work experience, volunteering, or practical projects
- Full UK driving license or willingness to work towards obtaining one
