Apprenticeship Metal Fabricator
As an Apprentice Metal Fabricator, you will learn fabrication, welding, and assembly techniques while helping to manufacture bespoke working-at-height platforms. You will gain experience working from engineering drawings, producing aluminium components, and following quality and safety standards in a professional workshop.
Wage
- £15,808 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age
- National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices
- Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)
- Pay may be subject to increase upon successful completion of a probation period.
Training Course
- Metal fabricator (level 3)
Hours
- Monday - Thursday 8:00am - 4:40pm
- Friday 8:00am - 3:00pm
- One 30-minute lunch break
- Two 15 minute breaks in the morning and afternoon
- 38 hours a week

What You'll Do at Work
- Learning to fabricate and assemble aluminium access platforms under the guidance of experienced metal fabricators and welders
- Developing TIG welding and metal fabrication skills while working towards industry-recognised qualifications
- Learning how to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and work instructions
- Assisting with measuring, cutting, shaping, and assembling metal components using a range of hand and power tools
- Building knowledge of quality standards by checking work and identifying any issues with support from colleagues
- Working safely and following workshop procedures, health and safety requirements, and good housekeeping practices
- Supporting the wider production team to complete projects on schedule while gaining practical, hands-on experience
- Taking an active role in apprenticeship training, continuously developing technical skills and engineering knowledge

What You'll Learn
Course Contents
- Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations, and organisational requirements.
- Comply with environmental legislation, regulations, and organisational requirements.
- Obtain, check, and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
- Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures, and equipment.
- Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance, or testing) using the correct procedures, processes, and/or equipment.
- Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
- Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
- Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
- Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing, etc.
- Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
- Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.
- Identify and follow correct joining instructions, specifications, drawing, etc.
- Carry out the relevant preparation before starting the joining fabrication activity.
- Set up, check, adjust, and use joining and related equipment.
- Weld joints in accordance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements.

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. Off-the-job training will follow the time allocations outlined in the Occupational Standard.
More Training Information
Throughout your apprenticeship, you will report directly to the Fabrication Manager and receive ongoing support and mentoring while completing your qualification. Comprehensive training and mentoring from experienced fabrication professionals provided.
Essential Qualifications
- GCSE in:
- 4 GCSE's including Maths and English (grade Grades 9-4 (A-C))
- Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
