Join Peter Smith Opticians as an Optical Assistant Apprentice. Earn while you learn in a supportive, professional environment, providing expert eyecare to our community. We offer hands-on mentorship, clinical training, and career progression. If you are a friendly, detail-oriented individual eager to start a rewarding career, apply today.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

As an apprentice, your role will be varied, bridging the gap between clinical support and customer service.

Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Customer Greeting: Welcoming patients to the practice and managing the appointment diary
  • Pre-screening: Learning to use specialist equipment to perform initial tests (such as auto-refraction and pressure tests) before the patient sees the Optometrist
  • Frame Styling: Assisting patients in selecting frames that suit their style, face shape, and prescription requirements
  • Technical Measurements: Taking precise measurements for lens positioning and explaining different lens types (e.g., anti-glare coatings or varifocals)
  • Admin & Maintenance: Processing NHS forms, ordering stock, and ensuring the retail display areas are clean and professional
  • Repairs: Learning how to perform minor spectacle repairs and adjustments for patients

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
