Wage
- £15,600 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age
- National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices
- Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)
- 28 days holiday includes Bank Holidays, paid overtime, pension scheme.

Hours
- Flexible 37.5 hours contract. Minimum 30 hours per week. Monday-Friday 8-10hrs between 6am and 6pm. 30 min lunch break.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
As an Apprentice Painter & Decorator you will paint and apply wallpapers and other decorative and protective finishes to a wide range of surfaces.
Your duties include preparing surfaces, mixing and applying paints and supervising painting projects.
Other duties will include:
- Working with clients to ensure they complete the work according to the requirements
- Measuring the work area to calculate the time and materials required to complete the project
- Preparing the surrounding area, including covering fixtures and furniture to prevent messes
- Preparing painting surfaces, including removing old paint, filling holes and cracks and washing walls; choosing the tools to complete the job
- Mixing and matching paints and colours to meet the texture and look required for the project; applying paint, varnishing and other finishes, hanging wallpapers and other decorative products
- Cleaning up painting tools and supplies, replacing fixtures and rearranging furniture after completing the project
- Collaborating with painters on other larger jobs and working with other construction professionals such as, carpenters, electricians and plumbers when necessary
Responsibilities include:
- Setting up equipment and work areas correctly
- Leaving areas clean and tidy; stirring and mixing paint, paste, putty, and filler correctly
- Equipment care and maintenance
- Vehicle organisation and care
- Removing old paint or wallpaper by sanding, scraping, heat gun, liquid paint removers, or steam stripper
- Calculating quantities
- Wallpapering
- Applying primers, paints, stains, varnishes, and other finishes; using brushes, rollers, or spraying equipment
- Be thorough and pay close attention to detail
- Be flexible and open to change; able to accept criticism and work well under pressure
- Communication skills
- Liaising with clients and colleagues in a clear and professional manner
- Behaving in a professional and polite manner at all times whilst representing the company
- Being health and safety conscious at all times
- Any other reasonable duties at the request of the director

- Check and safely use working at height equipment for example steps, hop-ups, and podiums.
- Identify hazards and comply with risk assessments, method statements, control measures and safe systems of work and report to manager when required.
- Read and interpret information for example from drawings, specifications, work instructions, manufacturer’s safety data sheets and manufacturer’s information such as colour charts and notations.
- Ensure materials are used efficiently and sustainably including suitable disposal of waste.
- Prepare work area: remove and store furnishings, fixtures and equipment and reinstate.
- Protect and prepare a safe working area, surrounding surfaces and environment.
- Select and use hand tools and equipment.
- Maintain and store hand tools.
- Select, use, maintain and store power tools.
- Prepare internal and external untreated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example: trowelled finishes plaster or render, plasterboard, timber and timber sheet materials; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous).
- Prepare internal previously coated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example trowelled finishes plaster or render, plasterboard, timber and timber sheet materials.
- Prepare external previously coated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example trowelled finishes plaster or render, timber and timber sheet materials; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous).
- Prepare and apply surface coatings to untreated external surfaces for example brick, stone, render, wood, metal using a brush and roller.
- Apply solvent borne and water borne coating systems using brush and roller to ceilings, walls, linear work (skirting board and architrave) doors: flush and panelled and opening windows.
- Prepare and apply foundation paper: Cross lining around socket and switches, internal and external angles.
- Prepare and apply Wallcoverings: Free match or random match finishing papers, vertical hanging, around socket and switches, internal and external angle.
- Carry out minor repair for example third party damage or post application defect.
- Apply team working principles.
- Verbally communicate with others, applying construction terminology.
- Communicate in writing with others for example, internal and external customers, colleagues.
- Follow equity, diversity and inclusion guidance.

Requirements
Essential qualifications
- GCSE in:
- English (grade 3/D or above or equivalent)
- Maths (grade 3/D or above or equivalent)
Desirable qualifications
- GCSE in:
- Science (grade 3/D or above or equivalent)

Other requirements
Ilkeston (DE7 8BN) will be your starting point, but you will be working across the East Midlands.
It is preferred although not essential that the candidate has passed a HS&E in construction test and has a valid Apprentice cscs.

Could be countless environments. The candidate must be comfortable in various environments from living spaces, to commercial buildings, building sites, to working on scaffolding outside. Before applying please consider that professional decorating is a physical trade, not for the faint hearted.
