About the Role
The apprentice will support the delivery of responsive repairs and empty home repairs across our homes. Working alongside experienced colleagues and an appointed mentor, the apprentice will gain practical workplace experience while contributing to the delivery of a high-quality service to customers.
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Planning and Organising
- Attend college sessions, workshops and apprenticeship reviews as required
- Complete assignments, portfolio evidence and assessments within agreed timescales
- Prepare work areas, materials, tools and equipment safely
- Develop productivity, quality and workmanship skills under appropriate supervision
Plastering Work
- Work alongside an appointed mentor to develop practical plastering, repair, preparation and finishing skills
- Assist with removing damaged plaster, preparing surfaces and carrying out patch repairs
- Develop skills in installing plasterboard systems, including wall and ceiling boarding and dot and dab
- Learn how insulation materials are installed during repair and maintenance works
- Develop skills in skimming, rendering and other plastering techniques
- Use plastering tools, materials and equipment safely and effectively
Learning and Development
- Develop knowledge, skills and behaviours in line with the apprenticeship standard
- Participate in training, coaching and development opportunities
- Seek guidance and feedback from mentors, supervisors and training providers
- Gain experience across different areas of Cobalt to understand social housing and customer service
- Develop confidence using Cobalt’s systems, technology and equipment
Communication and Customer Service
- Communicate professionally and respectfully with customers, colleagues and training providers
- Deliver excellent customer service and contribute to a positive customer experience
- Attend meetings and reviews to discuss progress and development
- Respond positively to feedback and build effective working relationships
Health, Safety and Wellbeing
- Follow risk assessments, method statements, policies and procedures
- Wear appropriate PPE and use tools, equipment and materials safely
- Take responsibility for personal health and safety and report any concerns
- Seek guidance when undertaking unfamiliar tasks and develop increasing responsibility as skills progress

What you'll learn
Course contents
Core:
- Comply with health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Identify and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
- Use access equipment for example, hop ups, podiums or low-level scaffolding.
- Interpret information from drawings and specifications.
- Store materials considering date order for rotation of stock.
- Prepare and maintain a safe working area.
- Check, use and store power tools and equipment, escalate faults or defects.
- Move and handle materials and equipment manually and with lifting equipment.
- Protect finished work and the surrounding area.
- Verbally communicate with others, for example colleagues, other tradespeople, managers and customers.
- Applies team working principles to their own and the wider build team.
SP:
- Estimate quantities and select solid plastering and render materials.
- Select, use and store hand tools for solid plastering and rendering.
- Mix materials for solid plastering and render to ratio.
- Apply floating coat plaster to solid back grounds, including the formation of 90 degree angles with bead, consolidation and mechanical key application.
- Apply setting coat plaster.
- Apply plain face render to scratch coat renders, including forming a hard angle.
- Apply scratch coat renders, including mechanical key, dobbing out coats and application of render beads.
- Prepare background surfaces to receive solid plasters, and renders, including the application of solid plastering and render primers and sealers.
- Measure, mark out and cut plasterboard to fit area and obstacles, using hand tools.
- Install plasterboard to timber surfaces and reinforce joints.
- Direct bond plasterboard to solid backgrounds, including sealing around obstacles.
- Carry out solid plaster repair: For example, replace plasterboard, patch plaster to solid background.

FP:
- Select, use and store hand tools for fibrous plastering applications.
- Estimate quantities and select fibrous plastering materials.
- Prepare and mix fibrous plaster materials, including reinforcement.
- Prepare and mark out background surfaces to receive fibrous plaster components.
- Construct moulds.
- Prepare bench and moulds for casting.
- Run mould and release casts.
- Measure and cut fibrous components to form straight and mitred cuts.
- Set and mark out for cornice installation.
- Fix cornice including straight runs, stops and 90 degree internal and external angles.
- Carry out fibrous plaster repair, for example, replacement or patching.
- Set out for fibrous plaster dados and ceiling centres.
- Fix fibrous plaster dados and ceiling centres.
Training schedule
One study day each week during active college terms
Desirable qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade C (5 or above))
- Maths (grade C (5 or above))
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
