About the Role

You will gain experience in fitness instructing, lifeguarding, swim teaching, and group activities. Support the safe operation of the leisure centre, provide excellent customer service, supervise poolside activities, and maintain facility standards. Swim test required at interview.

The role involves fitness instructing, lifeguarding, swim teaching, and leading group activity sessions — a fantastic opportunity to begin your career in the leisure industry.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the leisure centre
  • Supervise poolside activities and always ensure customer safety
  • Assist in the setup and delivery of fitness classes and group activity sessions
  • Provide excellent customer service to all members and visitors
  • Maintain cleanliness and operational standards across all facilities and support the reception and administration teams when required

Course Contents

  • Work in a team to support peers and colleagues to meet the goals of the business
  • Communicate (written, verbal) accurately and effectively and in line with legal requirements
  • Undertake the operational housekeeping of the leisure facility
  • Monitor customer use of equipment and ensure their safety, intervening as necessary
  • Comply with the legal requirements to ensure the safety, security and well-being of all colleagues and customers within the facility
  • Use IT including front of house system, social media and digital channels
  • Perform all the duties of a swimming teacher
  • Perform the duties of a lifeguard
  • Perform all of the duties of a gym instructor
  • Plan activity sessions using techniques that are suitable for the participant(s) and their goals
  • Undertake pre-activity screening and health and safety checks when leading group sessions/classes
  • Lead groups using appropriate communication methods and instructing styles and apply suitable group management techniques when instructing participants

Essential Qualifications

  • GCSE in:
    • Maths (grade 4)
    • English (grade 4)

Swim Test Requirements

If invited to interview, you’ll need to complete a swim test and demonstrate the following:

  • Jump or dive into deep water
  • Swim 50 metres in no more than 60 seconds
  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water, then tread water for 30 seconds
