When you work in Freight Logistics and Operations at Kuehne+Nagel

You play a key role in optimising processes and ensuring that inventory and shipments move efficiently. But that is not all. Your work also helps ensure that vital medicines reach patients on time and supports other essential deliveries, from wind turbines to semiconductors.

Look no further! We are currently seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Road Logistics team at our site in East Midlands Gateway. As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work with some of the best in the business and gain valuable insights into the industry.

The team work with our customers, other Kuehne+Nagel offices, overseas agents and service providers to ensure the successful transportation & delivery of our customers’ goods. We work with a diverse customer base – you could find yourself shipping canoes to Croatia or shoes to Slovakia. Every day is different!

You’ll be learning how to…

  • Manage the delivery, storage and transport of goods from our UK based warehouses
  • Support the planning and scheduling of shipments, including route optimisation and load planning
  • Work closely with internal teams, including warehouse staff, drivers to ensure seamless operations
  • Collaborate with external partners such as carriers and suppliers to optimise transportation solutions
  • Plan our domestic UK fleet or international line hauls, invoicing and technical processes for managing shipments
  • Understand an overview of customs requirements and procedures for transporting goods
  • Monitor and maintain records related to transport operations, including tracking information and performance metrics

Please be aware that this vacancy does not meet the minimum requirements for visa sponsorship and for apprenticeship funding, candidates must have been resident in the EEA for at least the last 3 years.

This is an entry level training position. If you are already qualified or experienced in this area of work, this is unlikely to be the position for you. However, we would welcome your application for one of our other vacancies.

Course contents

  • Select freight forwarding services based on customer requirements, taking into account country specific factors, delivery times and modes.
  • Use generic or bespoke ICT systems in order to enter and monitor data on importing or exporting goods.
  • Book, plan and monitor international shipments, using manual or ICT systems, in accordance with the rules and regulations that apply to that area of the world and to the goods consigned.
  • Prepare a customs declaration to a national standard, or give custom clearance instructions to a third party.
  • Use data systems to submit the information required by customs authorities as part of the management of the international movement of goods.
  • Produce freight costings and invoices in line with Incoterms, customer profile or sales contract.
  • Identify and source data from customers, systems or colleagues.
  • Identify and resolve problems in line with responsibilities.
  • Create and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Adapt communication based on the situation and the audience.
  • Identify problems outside of limits of responsibility and escalate within company policy.
  • Communicate in writing, preparing communications on technical matters.
  • Communicate with others verbally, including internal and external customers.

Air

  • Use and adapt terminology appropriate to the air freight industry.
  • Select and use documentation appropriate to the air freight industry.

Ocean

  • Use and adapt terminology appropriate to the ocean freight industry.
  • Select and use documentation appropriate to the ocean freight industry.

Road

  • Use and adapt terminology appropriate to the road freight industry.
  • Select and use documentation appropriate to the road freight industry.

You will work within a successful team while learning everything you need to know whilst supported by your peers, your managers, and the apprenticeship team within Kuehne+Nagel.

  • 5 GCSEs (grade 3-9 / A*-D)
  • English (grade 3-9 / A*-D)
  • Maths (grade 3-9 / A*-D)
