Apprentice welder

Working towards a Level 2 Welding Apprenticeship, developing the next generation of world-class engineers. The role includes learning how to read engineering drawings, working on exciting engineering projects daily, and understanding and learning MIG / TIG welding.

Requirements

  • GCSEs in English and Maths (grade 4 minimum)
  • Attention to detail

  • Desirable: Other relevant qualifications and industry experience (apprenticeship can be adjusted)

Responsibilities

  • Apply health and safety procedures including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Collect and use information (text and data), such as manufacturer's instructions, manuals, job instructions, drawings, and quality control documentation
  • Prepare welding materials and work area: sourcing, checking, and protecting
  • Prepare welding machines or equipment and safety protection measures (e.g., check calibration and maintenance dates, inspect for cable damage)
  • Check and use or operate tools and equipment
  • Set, modify, and monitor welding controls (e.g., current, arc voltage, wire feed speed, gas flow rates, polarity, mechanised tractor units)
  • Identify issues and actions required, and escalate concerns
  • Use manual processes and equipment to remove material before and after welding
  • Weld using various processes (TIG, PAW, MMA, MIG/MAG, FCAW, SAW, etc.)
  • Adapt welding techniques to weld different material groups (e.g., carbon steel, alloy steels, stainless steel, nickel alloys, aluminium, titanium, copper alloys)
  • Weld materials in different joint configurations (e.g., butt, T-butt, fillet, cladding, buttering)
  • Adapt welding techniques to weld materials in different positions (e.g., down-hand, horizontal-vertical, horizontal, vertical-up, vertical-down, overhead, inclined)
  • Identify surface defects
  • Apply visual inspection, dimensional, and alignment checks
  • Restore the work area on completion of welding activities (e.g., clean equipment, tidy work area, return excess resources)
  • Communicate verbally with others (customers, colleagues, supervisors, managers)
  • Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations
  • Follow equity, diversity, and inclusion procedures
  • Follow work instructions (verbal or written)
  • Apply team working principles

Benefits

  • Wage: £16,536 for the first year (may increase based on age)
  • Training Course: Welder (level 2)
  • Hours: Monday - Friday, 07:30 - 16:30 (39 hours 45 minutes per week)
  • Start Date: Wednesday 2 September 2026
  • Duration: 1 year 6 months
  • Positions Available: 3
  • Potential for progression to a Level 3 apprenticeship or into office roles (e.g., Project Manager, Workshop Manager, Sales Manager)
