Are you looking to build a hands-on career in engineering, fabrication and construction?

We have an exciting opportunity for an Apprentice Fabricator / Welder / Steel Erector to join our growing Manufacturing Facility based at our Head Office in Barnsley.

This apprenticeship offers the opportunity to learn from experienced tradespeople across fabrication, welding and steel erection disciplines while gaining practical workplace experience and working towards a recognised qualification. You'll become part of a highly skilled team responsible for delivering steel fabrication and installation solutions that support major rail, infrastructure and civil engineering projects throughout the UK.

What You'll Learn

As part of your apprenticeship, you'll gain experience in:

  • Steel fabrication and assembly techniques
  • Welding and metalworking processes
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Manufacturing and installation of steel structures
  • Safe use of fabrication equipment, power tools and hand tools
  • Quality control and inspection procedures
  • Site installation and steel erection activities
  • Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) standards
  • Working within a professional engineering and manufacturing environment

The Role

Working alongside experienced fabricators, welders and steel erectors, you will support the manufacture, assembly and installation of a wide range of steelwork products and structures.

You will rotate through various aspects of the business to develop your skills and understanding of the entire fabrication and installation process, from workshop manufacture through to site installation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the fabrication and assembly of steel structures and engineering components.
  • Learn to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Measure, mark out, cut, drill, grind and prepare materials accurately.
  • Operate fabrication equipment and hand tools under supervision.
  • Support welding, fitting and finishing activities as your training progresses.
  • Assist with steel erection and installation activities on projects where required.
  • Help maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
  • Follow all health, safety and quality procedures.
  • Carry out basic quality checks on completed work.
  • Safely handle materials, equipment and components.
  • Support experienced team members with day-to-day workshop and site activities.
  • Attend college and apprenticeship training programmes as required.
  • Complete coursework, assessments and practical training to achieve your apprenticeship qualification.

About The Team

Our in-house fabrication team has experienced significant growth in recent years and continues to invest in its people, facilities and capabilities.

The team delivers specialist steel fabrication and installation solutions for rail, infrastructure and civil engineering projects throughout the UK. We support major internal projects as well as a growing external client base, manufacturing and installing a wide range of structures including bridges, platforms, staircases, access structures, steelwork components and bespoke engineering solutions.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking individuals with a positive attitude, strong work ethic and a genuine interest in engineering and manufacturing.

Essential Requirements

  • A keen interest in fabrication, welding, construction or engineering.
  • Good practical skills and a willingness to learn new techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work safely.
  • Reliable, punctual and enthusiastic approach to work.
  • Commitment to completing an apprenticeship programme.

Desirable

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths and English.
  • Experience using hand tools or working in a practical environment.
  • An interest in steel fabrication, welding or construction-related activities.
