The Apprenticeship at S&H UK
The apprenticeship at S&H UK involves the installation of engineered hardwood flooring. The apprenticeship will enable you to learn the production procedures involved in producing a high-quality wood floor, the safe use of power tools including Festool equipment, and will occasionally require international travel.
Wage: £16,640 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age
National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices
S&H UK will cover your commuting fees from your place of residence to work. We will also offer a salary review after completion of your apprenticeship.
Training course: Floorlayer wood based (level 2)
Hours: Monday to Friday, from 8.00am to 5.00pm. May require evenings or weekends from time to time. 40 hours a week

What You'll Do at Work
- Installing timber and parquet flooring on construction sites.
- Assisting senior carpenters with mobilising and managing job sites in London and outside London.
- Maintaining power tools and tool sets both on-site and at the warehouse unit in SW20.
- Acquiring foundational knowledge in the restoration of timber floor surfaces.

What You'll Learn
Course contents
- Comply with health and safety regulations, standards and guidance.
- Select and use safety control equipment, use personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
- Verbally communicate with others: For example, employers, colleagues, clients, other trades.
- Use written or digital methods to communicate with others.
- Calculate material quantities, qualities and select required resources.
- Remove and dispose of existing floorcovering.
- Isolate, protect and prepare the work area.
- Test the subfloor condition prior to the application of the smoothing compound and fabricated underlayment: for example, remove surface contaminants and laitance, mix and apply moisture control systems, application of primers.
- Prepare the sub floor for the floorcovering: for example, installation of fabricated underlayments, mixing and application of smoothing compounds, installation of sheet membranes.
- Interpret and use information from drawings, specifications, work instructions.
- Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
- Carry out pre-user checks, use and maintain plant and equipment.
- Escalate defects or faults.
- Store tools, materials and equipment.
- Measures, marks and sets out floorcoverings.
- Use and maintenance of hand tools used in the preparation and installation of wood-based floorcoverings.
- Use wood-based floorcovering power tools and equipment.
- Use local exhaust ventilation (LEV) equipment.
- Determine correct expansion gaps in wood-based floorcoverings considering; temperature, relative humidity (RH), manufacturer guidelines, area and wood type.
- Apply installation techniques for underlayments for wood-based floorcoverings.
- Apply techniques for setting out, cutting, and matching wood-based floorcoverings.
- Select fixing method for the wood-based floorcovering installation for example nail down, glue down, floating.
- Use sanding equipment on installed or refurbished wood-based floorcovering.
- Use finishing techniques and products for example: hard wax, oil, stains and sealants.
- Apply installation techniques for finishing accessories for example, thresholds, skirtings, profiles, stair nosings and trims.
- Carry out remedial work on wood-based floorcoverings.
- Resolves problems with timber subflooring prior to a flooring installation.
- Apply installation techniques for floating and fixed wood-based floorcoverings.

Training will be conducted either on a construction site under the supervision of senior carpenters or at our warehouse unit in SW20.
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
